I've counted by exactly 5 minutes when Jeanine's (who is the leader of our world) voice booms over the dome.

"This choice will impact your whole life and our lovely society, so choose wisely!" For some reason I have never liked her. She just gives me a bad feeling in my gut. Soon after that names start to get called to pick their faction, something I still haven't decided. But instead of deciding I look around at the other factions. Abnegation just looks like a gray blob, Candor looks like the black pavement and white snow got into a fight, Erudite looks like a sea bright with blue, the Dauntless look like they are at a funeral, and the Amity look like ketchup, mustard and a rainbow had a baby.

"Tobias Eaton" a voice booms. As if in unison, we give each other a last glance and he leaves and walks up to the fish bowls. One for each faction. Gray rocks for Abnegation, glass for Candor, soil for Amity, water for Erudite, and coal for Dauntless. I watch Tobias walk up to the bowls, cut his hand with the knife and let his blood trickle over the coal and sit down with the Dauntless.

"Cassidy Foyer" the voice booms again. Suddenly my heart starts racing faster and faster. I'm such an idiot! I spent too much time watching Tobias that I forgot to think of what faction to choose. I need to move but I can't! I can't move! What the hell is wrong with me!

"Cassidy Foyer please come up" the voice says. But now I know everyone is looking at me. I'm looking around, but I have no clue for who. That's only when I meet Tobias's eyes. I suddenly feel super self conscious and will my body to move. Before I know what I'm doing I am half way up to the bowls. I think back to my aptitude test, where a Dauntless women told me I was divergent; that I didn't fit into just one faction. I fit into 3: Abnegation, Erudite and Dauntless. Now I'm standing on the platform with the knife in my hand. Closing my eyes, I slide the knife's blade through my palm. "Hide where they least would expect to find you" the women had said. The words repeat in my mind. I know what I must do now. My hand floats over the Abnegation bowl, and I secretly drop a dot on blood in between the rocks. Next it goes over the Erudite water, and I do the same. Now I'm at the Dauntless coal and let the rest of my blood trickle onto the steaming coal. What I just did was risky, and if anyone finds out, I could be killed. But I make my way to the rest of the Dauntless initiates and sit in front of Tobias.

The other names drag by. Some join Dauntless others don't. When the last name is called Jeanine makes another speech about the factions. Then the dauntless are standing up, myself included, and running towards the train. All my life I have seen the dauntless jump on and off these trains, but I have never thought I would be doing it. I have never ran this fast before, and I'm doing the best I can to catch up with everyone. My legs and my lungs are about to collapse when I hear my name.

"Cassidy! Cassidy come on!" I am looking for the voice but I can't quite find it. Black spots are taking over my vision. Right when I swear I am dying someone grabs my hand and pulls me to their body. I look up and realize it's Tobias. He is carrying me to the train!

"I'm okay. Really, I'm fine!"I try to say yelling over the wind and loud footsteps.

"No you're not! We are about 20 ft from the train. At 10 I will let you down so you can jump. But do not let go of my hand unless you want to get ran over" he replies. All I can do is nod. He soon lets me down but I don't let go of his hand (a) because I don't feel like dying (b) because I have never held a boys hand before. The train is coming up, and I gather all my strength to reach the handle on the outside. I start to wipe my face when I realize that I let go of his hand when I jumped. Shitty shit shit! Cassidy you idiot! I turn around frantically to see that he is hanging on by one hand trying to grab on with the other. My abnegation instincts kick in and I reach out to help him in.

"Damn it Cassidy! Looks like I got a ruler breaker on my hands. Or should I say off my hands?" he says with a smirk. All I can do is smile back. But I manage just to say sorry. The train takes us to the dauntless compound, we all jump off, and head to where our instructor, Amar, leads us to the roof of a building. I look to Tobias to see if he knew anyone that hadn't made it so far, but all I see is someone that is trying to hold back fear. Maybe is afraid of heights.

"Everyone down there is our compound. So who wants to go first!" Amar tells us. I look down off the edge of the roof. It looks like a bottomless pit, but I know if Amar is telling us to jump we won't die, will we? I start to step back and sink onto the shadows like I'm used to, but I'm Dauntless now. It's time to act like it.

I step forward in front of everyone about to jump when someone pushes me back.

"Outta the way Stiff! This isn't your turf!" a boy says as he jumps off. That bastard! How dare he! My thoughts startle me, but I need to get used to it. So I decide to jump next. A small scream escapes my mouth as I fall. It feels like forever with the wind wiping through my brown hair. Suddenly I hit a net. I start to flail my limbs while I think I died, but I am not dead. Sitting up, I see the boy that jumped first with his mouth open like the rest of the trainers there. I was the second jumper, no big deal, but I was an abnegation girl. That's unheard of. I hop out of the net with the help of another trainer.

"Welcome to Dauntless" she says.
