Chapter 4

Cheers are now all I hear as everyone else is jumping down now. Once everyone is down the dauntless born go with a trainer named Liz. All if the other initiate transfers go with Amar.

"Listen up everyone", his voice booms. "Today we will just take a tour around the compound to show you what Dauntless life looks like. Tomorrow you will experience it. Follow me".

We do as we're told and follow Amar to the cafeteria. When Amar starts talking again, I slowly start to take in my surroundings. The floor is smooth concrete, almost like everything else in this place. It's not that much different from my abnegation home except that the color here is black, not grey.

Since the scenery is just so beautiful (not) I decide to look at the people here. Right away I notice that we are missing at least five people. They must have not made the jump or train. As I scan the area my eyes keep darting to Tobias. He isn't the tallest, only a tad but taller than me. And his eyes... I could look into them all day. He catches my stare and I quickly turn my head back around, but I can't keep the blush from forming on my face.

"This is the chasm", Amar says pointing to the deep pit of water underneath us. "It draws the line in between bravery and idiocy, so don't be dumb."

As I look down all I can see is water crashing into mountain like rocks down below. I wonder if anyone has ever jumped off? But we are moving yet again and the thought passes.

We pass the place where we will shoot throw knifes and fight. We stop at the dorms where the all the transfers will be staying. Amar tells us to get our beds and sleep because tomorrow will be a long day. Everyone rushes to the good bunks in the middle of the room so me, a girl from candor, a boy and girl from Erudite, another boy from amity are forced to go to the outer bunks by the wall. Tobias is still looking for a bed in the middle. I think about getting his attention, but quickly decide against it. I wouldn't want to lead myself on onto a guy that most likely doesn't like me, would I?

Once I get settled in, I see someone else looking for a bed. He has abnegation clothes, but is turned around so I can't see his face. Then he does. I recognize him right away, he was my neighbor back when we were both Abnegation. It makes a lot of sense that he chose Dauntless. Back home he would always break the rules. He was the big brother I never had.

"Nash?" I call out. We meet eyes so I call out again, this time waving him over to the open bunk.

"Cassidy? Wow! I'm so glad I'm not the only Abnegation here. Although I am surprised that you chose Dauntless." He says almost too loud.

I try to motion to bring it down, but he doesn't get the memo.

Soon after everyone has made there beds with the sheets provided, the girl from candor starts talking.

"Hi! My name is Lily. You guys are?"

"Tanner", the Amity boy speaks up.

Now everyone is saying their names. The girl right next to my bunk is from Erudite and her name is Kae. The other Erudite is Carin. Last is Nash.

"I'm Cass", I say. And just like that, everyone starts talking like we've known each other since birth. Kae notices that I'm not talking and comes towards me and plops down on my bed.

"Are you okay Cass? You look down" she says.

"Yes, I'm fine. Just thinking."

"Thinking about him?" She replies averting her eyes towards Tobias. Until then I hadn't realized that I was looking at him. He isn't that far away, only a few bunks down, but I can still spot him out. Kae gives me a look then leaves me to sleep. The lights go off, and I can hear the quiet sobs of some people. Soon one huge sob escapes Tanner's mouth and I sit straight up. My abnegation instincts kick in and I walk slowly to his bunk and place a hand on his back.

"Tanner it's okay, it will be okay", I try to say soothingly. I stay there until his sobs quiet down then to back to my own bed and sleep.

I wake up at 7:30 am like I normally do. I'm about to brush my hair out when I realize that I'm Dauntless now, and I'm not the only one up. Tobias is up too. I decide to ignore him and get dressed into the new dauntless clothes. When I come back from the bathroom, I suddenly stop in front of the mirror one of the 10 initiates hung up on the bunk. All I can do is look at myself. The girl I know was skinny, frail, and dressed in baggy clothes. The person I look at now has tight black clothes on with scraps and bruises all over her face and arms. I pull my truffle colored hair into a loose ponytail, and start to head back to my bunk.

"So you've found the mirror I see", Tobias says stepping out of the shadows. "Its different seeing yourself like this.". He gestures to his appearance.

"Yes it is. I'm a whole new person now but I don't know if that's a good or bad thing", I manage to reply.

There's a long silence as we just look at each other, and I start to head back to my bed. "Good", he says. "Your good." Another long pause. "I saw what you did last night for that Amity boy." At this pause, I say something.

"Yah well I guess my instincts just kicked in."

"Well they should kick in more." He says with a smirk. As he turns around, I can't help but notice his toned body. Then a bell goes off telling us to get up. After that Amar comes in and tells us to meet in the training room at 8:15.

I meet with Kae, Nash, Lily, Tanner, and Carin to go to the training room. When we get there Amar starts talking.

"Listen up initiates! Today will start the first day of training for stage one. There will be 3 stages of your initiation!" Then he is interrupted by another person.

"The first stage is physical where you will fight each other, learn to shoot and throw. The second is emotional and the last is mental! My name is Shawn." Right then and there I get a gut feeling that Shawn isn't a good person, let alone instructor. His piercing are all over his body. The same with tattoos. "Now everyone grab a gun! You will learn how to shoot a gun today!"

I grab a gun and then it hits me, this is the first weapon I have ever held. I will now be dangerous. I will now become Dauntless.
