We approached the gas station while crouching down in the bushes, I looked around to see if anyone was around before sprinting my way across the street. The coast looked clear. "You ready Matt?" I asked looking forwards.
"I dunno" he replied, he had some doubts about how much success we will have on this mission.
"By the looks of it, this place hasn't been hit yet" I said while checking my gun to see if was still loaded.
"You know, this is robbery and if this mess we are all in ever gets sorted out and we get caught we can still go to jail" Matt nagged.
"The world will never be the same Matthew, ever." I said while looking down to the ground.
"And how do you know that?" He asked
"Because the military pulled out of Danbury the other day, WE are all alone" I said while looking him right in the eyes.
"You've been down to the river? Don't you know that's a No-Go zone? What if you got infected!?" Matt went on "You never think things through do you?
"Oh shut it, I was down there too see if Milo was still alive...he lived down by Main Street and our group needs more people" I replied with a annoyed tone
"Well?" Matt asked
"Well what?" I snapped
"What happened to Milo?" Matt asked
"The same thing that happened to the other 7 billion people on the world, he died." I said with a blank face.
"You don't know if this thing is worldwide yet, it could just be this town or the state" Matt said, trying to sound reassuring.
"No, don't be stupid. This infection spread through bite and infected food... its world wide and we will never be in a safe area" I said. Crushing his hopes of getting somewhere that's untouched by all this shit.
"It been a month since we lost contact with the world, the cell towers went down the tv signal lost... and the radio stopped broadcasting the news" I added
"Whatever, let's just scavenge this place... our enclave needs more food and water" I said before Matthew had a chance to say another word.I looked around one more time before running across the street, no one was around. We both ran down the hill and across the street to the gas station.
"Matthew, go around the back and see if you can find any jerry cans for fuel so we can get the generators working again, I'll go inside and see if I can get any food for our group" I instructed.
Matthew nodded and walked around the building to look for some fuel, while I opened the door to the gas station, the door was glass but I couldn't see through it. The door was smeared with dirt and dust, it hasn't been cleaned in a very long time. While inside the feeling that someone was watching me overcame my thoughts, I looked around the isles of the gas station mini mart to see if any food was left. Of course I wouldn't find milk and eggs... unspoiled that is.. but I was able to find some simple snacks and a few soft drinks that don't expire for a few more months. I looked around some more, maybe if was lucky enough I'd find a medical kit. While I was packing the supplies I heard some fumbling coming from the other room, I looked over to the door that was closed and probably locked. The noise was coming from the other side of that door.
"Matt?" I whispered out into the open. "Is that you?"
I slowly made my way to where the door was and my heart couldn't of been beating any faster, I got my gun ready just incase it was one of the infected on the other side. I reached for the doorknob and opened the door as fast as I could. Just then, a few crows flew out of the room, scaring me I fell to the floor and let off a gun shot.
"Shit shit" I said to myself
"George?!" Matt screamed running into the station
He saw my on the floor with nothing in front or behind me. "Why did you shoot a gun off? Every infected for miles are going to be coming down on this place now" Matt nagged.
"Well, we won't be here to welcome them. Let's go, the house probably needs us... did you find any fuel?" I asked
" Yeah, a lot actually." Matt said with a smile "We will have enough for a few more weeks of electricity" he added.
Matt and I ran out of the mart, even thought I shot off my gun and alerted some infected this mission wasn't that bad. Matt and I got back in our car, we placed our findings in the back and radioed Riley telling her what we got.
