Chapter Six

"Are we finally good to go?" I asked looking over the layout of the building one last time. I needed to get in and out of the archives and I had a two minute window to do so. Apparently Clark planned this mission down to the second despite not having an inkling of what a real op looks like. He says it's five minutes and thirty seconds but I say it's only two because finishing it in a minute and thirty seconds would just be me showing off.
"Yes, we are a go, now if you get in trouble the safe word is penguin, if you can't find what we're looking for it's dandelion, if you have to pee during the mission the safe word is Arizona-" Before he could continue with his list which looked to be about twenty more words long I cut him off.
"Contrary to popular belief, my old job wasn't much like Mission Impossible. I am literally just going to walk in there and get it." I stated boredly.
"But what about the plan?" He asked almost sadly. After I changed in the back of the van Clark tried to add some things to my version of the plan...suffice to say he's watched too many movies.
"Like I said, your plan is too long and too complicated. I don't need a backstory and I certainly didn't need you to create a fake birth certificate." Letting him down easily would only leave room for mistakes next time. Hopefully he gets the message.
"Okay fine, just remember it's a silver book with a red star in the middle of it. It's in the back of that storage room probably hidden behind some old stuff." He reminded and I hopped out of the van and went to stand in line with the other visitors. The sooner I get in the quicker I get out.

"That was more than two minutes." Clark whined and I rolled my eyes.
"One of the guards were cute, I had to get my flirt on." I shrugged and Clark's fury radiated off of him making me roll my eyes once again. I didn't mean to take so long but my German was a little rusty so I had to think fast about what I was looking for. It still took me a minute extra to get what I was looking for, hence the reason I took so long and the reason I bumped into the guard in the first place.
"This was serious, you should've signaled to me that you'd take longer!" He fumed.
"Signaling you wouldn't have done any good, not that I would've had time to talk to you in the first place. Plus the book wasn't where you said it was, making me have to look for it longer. And let's not forget who's the secret agent between the two of us. I knew what I was doing, unlike you. I got what you wanted so we're done here, now let's get on the road we're on a tight schedule." I said with finality. Clark turned from me and looked straight ahead taking a few calming breaths.
"Before we go, can I see the book?" I pulled the book from out of the back of my pants where it was hidden under my shirt. Handing it to him I ignored the familiar blood red star.
While he looked at the book I watched the embassy building and the surrounding guards making sure nothing had gone wrong. I did this for a few minutes before I heard Clark muttering. Turning to him I noticed he was pretty focused on the book. Furrowing my eyebrows I tried to snap him out of it.
"Clark?" I said with a few snaps in his face. He lifted his head to look at me.
"Hmm?" He hummed.
"...Are you good?" I asked skeptically. And the last thing I remember him saying before I blacked out was;
"Juni Sonne, Mitternachtsmond, Dezember Wärme, März kalt." (June sun, midnight moon, december warmth, march cold.)

I sighed as Claire fell limp in the passengers seat. Reaching over her I grabbed her seatbelt and put it over her, safety first and all that.
"The truth is, Claire, you're right." I said talking to her unconscious figure. "I am new at this secret spy thing...but hey a mission is a mission. Man I hope you don't hate me after this. After all I am still your big brother, sure I'm adopted and everything but once a Barton always a Barton." I started up the van and pulled off tucking the silver journal underneath my seat as I drove.
Continuing our riveting conversation, although one-sided, I spoke. "Man I can't believe Fury of all people led me right to you! Just a story about wanting to get the family back together and he broke! And that story about extra siblings was such a masterpiece. Your twin sister is very much alive but I'm afraid it really is just the three of us... You know, I'm pretty sure she's in the same boat as you are; a former SHIELD agent trying to find her place in the world. It's a wonder how everyone talked about you but never her. Well we'll figure it out after I find her too."
