“Ray, I don’t get why their moving me.”
Blake was half out of it and fighting me on the transfer. She may not have known just how little money we had, but she did know that there was no way I could afford Richmore on my own. I didn’t relish the thought of lying to her but I how could I tell her I was –basically- selling myself to pay for her hospital bills?
“Mr. Handsome Russian Voice-”
I tried to lighten the mood with a joke but she cut me off.
“Mr. Russian Handsome Voice. Get it right, Ray. Jeez.”
Her dazed laughter was slightly slurred and her rolling eyes seemed to only make it half way before they closed, though her body still shook with silent hilarity. I would have grinned and laughed with her, had it not been for the current situation with said Russian. Handsome or not, I could never look at him the same now. He was not the man I thought he was, and frankly, whoever this man was I didn’t care to know.
“Let’s just stick with Mr. Markoff then since I’ll probably forget later. Um, anyway…he agreed that…uh…this would be…my bonus! You know how he normally gives me a small Christmas bonus, well, I get it early this year.”
I thanked the heavens she was so heavy medicated that she most likely wouldn’t catch my lie. Not only was it only late July, but my yearly bonuses would never cover the cost of her treatment at Richmore. I knew eventually she would bring it up again (at a time when she wasn’t floating on drug induced cloud) and I would have to either tell her the truth or continue to lie to her. I knew it would be the latter since there was no way in Hell I was going to tell my baby sister I was sleeping with a man for money. I mentally groaned at the thought.
“Well that was nice of him. When I get better we should take him out for dinner…or a pony ride. I wonder if he likes candle bears? ….what about the color pink?....”
She went silent for a full minute before rambling on again.
“Jarrod is funny. Don’t you think he is funny? Ha-ha boat rides….what were we talking about?”
I did my best to remember she was currently on a high dose of pain medication and also still loopy from the anesthetics. I hadn’t known half of what she was talking about so I just smiled and nodded along. Just as Blake went on again about boats and bears (I had no idea but she was happy at the moment) Dr. Jimburt came into her room.
“Everything’s set up Miss Addis. Dr. Reynolds will meet Blake upon her arrival, however, there will be many tests to run so he thought it best for you to head home for some rest. He’s still working on a private room and once that is situated, you will be more than welcome to stay.”
Private room? I didn’t ask for a private room. That would cost a fortune. How could they think I could afford a private room? My thoughts raced until a pair of bright blue orbs flashed in my mind. Luka. Of course, he would make sure to spend as much as he could. I’m sure he wouldn’t want to jeopardies his chances to get laid sooner.
“Excuse me!”
I couldn’t hold it in any longer. I ran for the adjoined toilet in the room and dry heaved. Something, anything, wanting to come up but since I had still yet to eat I was stuck with the aching motions without the comfort of the relief. I was tempted to skip down to the cafeteria for a bite just to achieve the retching my body needed.
In a few short hours I would be signing my life and my body away for a whole year. If this business about a private room was any indication, I would assume Luka was also expecting a little gratitude this evening. I shivered at the thought of just how far he wanted to go tonight. Surely, he would give me time to ease into this? He couldn’t really expect me to just spread my legs so soon…could he?
