Travis was a lot of things, but right now he was scared.

They were everywhere. Wherever Travis looked, he could still see them.

"Sound the alarm!" He ordered, using his arm to shield his eyes from the sun.

Garroth gave him a small nod, then began running up the hill towards the square. Travis took a deep breath. This was his first time taking charge properly.

It was nine years ago that he had become a guard for Phoenix Drop. At first, it was just to please his wife. They were short on money as it was, and once Katelyn had fallen pregnant with a child she had to stop working.

Travis quickly slipped a photo of his son and her out of his pocket. A smile tugged at his lips. Even in the middle of a crisis, where he could potentially die Katelyn still made him happy.
For good luck, Travis kissed the picture then ran his finger over their faces.

"I'll come back. I promise."

"Jason! Stop squirming," Katelyn's picture seemed to chuckle, and try to hold the little boy still. He stuck his tongue out, and the picture became still again in Travis' eyes.

Travis hadn't realised, but there was a tear trickling down his left cheek. He wiped it away, and stuck the photo back in his pocket.

"Prepare for battle!" He screamed, conscious that all the other guards were looking at him for guidance.

"Dad!" a boy with long, light blue hair pushed through the crowds of people.

"Jason! Wait up," Katelyn ran after him, apologising to the guards as she went.

"Jase, Katelyn... you can't be here. Get out of Phoenix Drop," Travis instructed, taking his wife's hand in his own as she reached him.

"What about you, dad?"

He ruffled his son's hair, then went down on one knee, "Protect your Mum for me."

"I'll be just like you one day, dad!" Jason flung his arms around Travis, tears streaming from his eyes.

"I don't doubt that for a moment," Travis hugged him back.

He let go of his son, then looked at Katelyn. The girl who had so long ago called him names, and wanted nothing to do with the flirty snowball. The girl who Travis had always loved, loved him back.

They stared at each other for a few moments. "I'll see you again," Travis stated simply.

"Will you?" Katelyn's eyes were brimmed with tears, too.

"I will."

Katelyn stepped forward, and kissed him, "I love you... dork."

"I love you, too, Katie."

Jason tugged at his Mum's hand, and attempted to drag her towards the woods, "Come on, Mam!"

Katelyn shared one last look with her white haired boy (who gave her a watery smile) then she sprinted off with her son. Their son.

A few guards looked at Travis with jealousy, but he chose to ignore them.

"Umm... my fellow- my fellow guards!" He coughed, and from the crowd he heard a sniffer or two, "Today, we will fight. We will fight for what we believe in! We will fight for Phoenix Drop, and our... and our families, and Lady Aphmau!"

Now he had their attention, "We may not win, but we will die trying! And if we die, we die with honour... and we will know that Phoenix Drop will be grateful for what we have done."

There was a roar of agreement, and the clang on metal on the dusty ground.

"Whose with me?" Travis screamed at the top of his voice.

Another roar.

Travis was a lot of things, but right now he was determined. He would see Katelyn and Jason again. He would...

"CHARGE!"
