Song of Starlight

Darkness wraps around the trees,

Shadowing the magnificent sight,

A ruru wails a mournful call,

Beginning the Song of Starlight.

The waves crash and smash on the beach,

Ocean howls with all of it's might,

The unison of tidal roars,

Adds a chorus to the Song of Starlight.

The tender touch of wind rustles Toitoi,

Pulling strands of feather into flight,

Quiet whispers and murmurs of life,

Join the gentle Song of Starlight.

Children sleep softly in warm fluffy gowns,

Sweet dreams swirl in the night,

Happy faces and peaceful snores,

Harmonise the Song of Starlight.

A Maori woman proudly stands alone,

Waiata in her heart and eyes alight,

She begins to sing a sad lullaby,

That beautifies the song of the night.

The rains break and the sky blackens,

In thunderous delight,

The pitter-patter of rain hitting the ground,

Beats the rhythm in the Song of Starlight.

And if you sit in silence,

On a New Zealand Summer night,

You might just hear a glorious song,

The glorious Song of Starlight.
