*Bzzz*"Ugh,would you shut up already!", I muttered while angrily waving my fist at the stupid alarm clock. I wish I could say that today was going to a great day and that birds are chirping outside of my window like some fairytale, but I can't. Unfortunately today is the day that all kids and teenagers around the world dread after two and a half months of summer break.
The first day of school.
I wish that summer break was infinitely longer. As in, I never want to go back to school. My sleep schedule is totally screwed and I want 5 more minutes of sleep. I leaned my head back down only to remember that I still hadn't shut off the damn alarm clock.
Every once in awhile I forget that I practically have a useless knee and try to use it, only to be painfully reminded that I can barely function it. Today happened to be another one of those days. I turned to get off of my bed to finally shut that damned alarm clock off only to be met with a sharp pain that instantly made regret trying to get up on my own. I hissed at the pain, and began to become even more frustrated with the alarm as it never fails to remind me that it has to be manually shut off. Why my parents never bothered to gets a different alarm clock, I'll never understand. Seriously though, speaking of my parents, I really need someone to shut this thing off for me right about now.
"Mom!", I called out praying that she would hear me over everyone else in the house and come to my rescue. For some reason, even though there's only 4 people in this house, it always seems to sound like mayhem is going on in it. Probably because everyone is so busy. My dad is a lawyer, and my mom is a nurse. Which if I don't have to say it out loud, it means that I barely see them. Dad is always working after hours to make progress in the cases he's working on for his firm, and Mom gets called in at random hours of the day to help out in the hospital. If that already isn't enough, then try having a 'know-it-all' 12 year old for a brother. I'd say it gets pretty hectic even without me being here.
After what seemed like forever, my mom finally burst in my room, looking like she was in a rush.
"Abigail, I'm so sorry." she started as she went over to the chair in the corner of my room that had my knee brace draped across it. She grabbed it made her way back towards me. "You know how things usually are on the first day of school. I was making breakfast, and got distracted listening to your dad rummage through the house looking for his briefcase, and listening to Tommy complain about needing help fixing his tie. Not to mention I just got called in for work a couple of minutes ago and-"
"Mom, calm down. It's okay." I assured her. She looked stressed out and the easiest thing I could possibly do was not to make a big deal out of anything right now. She fit my brace on and strapped it on as she backed up and looked at me."So what happened with Dad's briefcase and Tommy's tie?", I asked.
She lightly chuckled. "Dad's briefcase was sitting clear as day on top of his computer desk. Sometimes I swear that man is blind. Tommy was overreacting and his tie looked perfectly fine." She waved her hand in an exaggerated motion before staring at me. She ran her hand through my strawberry blonde hair and sighed, "You look so much like her."
"Grandma?", I questioned as I began to stand up to go to the bathroom to brush my teeth and wash my face.
"Yes, and you look just as beautiful as she did. You have the same hair and eye color as she did. I often confuse your green eyes with hers." She looked at me sadly, then began to speak again. "It's making me upset that I can't be here to drop you off at school on your first day of your senior year. Tommy too, you guys grow up so fast", she said as she started to tear up.
