A sole lamp shone it's light through the room. The clock said midnight, but the girl was not asleep. Not even close. She sat as her desk, rapidly tapping her pencil against the smooth surface. The rosy pink eraser had been chewed down to the point where it was completely gone, and now the sleek yellow wood had teeth marks in it too.
Much to the girl's dismay, the paper in front of her was blank. Her inspiration had died hours before; she was obviously failing at reviving it. The girl groaned and slapped the side of her head multiple times.
When that didn't work, she let out a sad sigh of defeat and placed the pencil gently next to the paper. Then she turned off her lamp and curled up in bed. But just before she closed her eyes, which were becoming heavy with sleep, an idea popped into her brain. It was a genius idea, one that might just win the contest for her.
Afraid of losing her train of thought before she could transfer it to the paper, she leaped out of bed. And just like that, she was once more hunched over her desk. But this time, she was forming words on white.
She wrote, erased, revised, and edited for what seemed to her like days. The paper was masked in words and random smudges when she eventually leaned back in her chair, clearly satisfied with her final product.
"Writing truly is hard. You can't just slap anything down - you have to think until your ideas flow down your paper like a waterfall and it's purpose shines distinctly through. But even then, we must remember there is always room for improvement. And that's really not a terrible thing."
The proud smile hardly came close to escaping the girl's face when she finally crawled into bed and closed her eyes, drifting into a land of delightful dreams filled with pencils and white pages.
