the concert part 1

Friday. Finally. I had just left my last class of the day and I headed out to meet my friend for lunch. Me and Nicole were polar opposites. She's a vegetarian, I will eat any kind of meat (especially if it had jerk or curry seasoning on it). She's a native Texan, I'm Caribbean. She's white, I'm black. I could go on. But, somehow I had gotten paired as her roommate and we've sort of been inseparable ever since.

The pizza place was only one subway stop and a few blocks of a walk away from school, but somehow, I was always stuck waiting for Nicole. And she didn't even have any classes on Fridays.

"Hey girl sorry I'm late but I have a huge surprise for you" Nicole greeted me with a perfectly made-up face and a flirty floral dress.

"Oooh is it money?" I immediately asked. Her expression went dead and she rolled her eyes.

"No stupid. It's better than money" she said.

"Impossible."

"Look what I found outside our complex" she squealed as she reached into her purse. "Look!" she demanded, shoving a crumpled flyer in my face.

"5 Seconds of Summer: Back to School Concert " I unfolded the paper and read. "Never heard of em"

"Because you're stupid and you never listen to music that was made in this decade. Also they're a new local band" Nicole explained simply, tucking the flyer safely back into her pristine Armani purse. She was sort of right, even though she was exaggerating a bit. I've listened to Beyonce's new album at least 60 times now (which was totally released in this decade). But I mostly listened to rap music from the 90s like A Tribe Called Quest and the Roots and stuff.

"Whatever hoe" I snapped. "When's the concert" I knew basically had no choice but to go with her to see 5 Seconds of Summer.

"Tonight at 9!" she squealed again. I immediately rolled my eyes. Count on Nicole to find out about something at the last minute

"Of course" I mumbled and walked up to the counter to order two slices of pepperoni pizza for myself and one veggie slice for Nicole.

"I can't believe you eat that garbage" Nicole cringed as I folded my first slice in half and shoved it in my face. "Ugh god look at all the grease from the pepperoni...you're fucking disgusting"

"Why are you so dramatic" I said in between bites. "Plus, I gotta stay thick hoe"

"Whatever, you'll always be thick"

....

"I'm so glad we're finally getting more girl time together, Mecca" Nicole sighed as she barged into the bathroom (even though I was still on the toilet). "You're going to love 5sos and we're gonna have so much fun I'm so excited I can't believe we're gonna meet them!" she rambled.

"Yeah I guess" I said passively. I was the less emotional of us two, so I wasn't really all that excited. "I have no idea what to expect, but I'm guessing it's not a group of hot black r&b singers" I joked.

I made my way to the closet and picked up my trusty pair of fade high waisted jeans that my mom had from when she was younger. I dug out a ribbed brown bandeau from my drawer and put it on. Then I waited.

I always thought it was interesting to watch Nicole do her makeup, especially considering she was already wearing it earlier today. It also amazed me how long she spent doing it. Considering the 4 or 5 hour long nap I took earlier, Nicole had probably been getting ready for around 2 or 3 hours  now. I was in the bathroom with her for 20 minutes before she turned to examine my outfit.

"I'm pretty sure I saw that laying on the floor of your closet" she said disapprovingly. "You're not even wearing a bra, Mecca seriously"

"You are correct Nick" I confirmed. "But I did my edges" I pointed to the top of my forehead. No matter what my outfit looks like, I always make sure my edges stay perfectly sculpted.

"You couldn't put any more thought into what you wear?" she raised her undone eyebrow at me. "Do you realize that tonight, you're meeting Ashton Irwin, Luke Hemmings, Michael Clifford, and Calum Hood?" she took me by the shoulders and shook me as she recited the names of what I assumed were the band members of 5 Seconds of Summer.

"I probably could've put more thought into my outfit...But I don't want to" I admitted. While Nicole saw this concert as the most important night of her life, I just saw it as something to fill up my Friday night.

"Ugh whatever Mecca, I really can't reason with you can I" she said, defeated as I turned on my Rihanna playlist. "At least your ass looks fat." she slapped my butt as I started dancing to my fave 'Bitch Better Have My Money'.

"I'm glad you recognize the important things" I said and proceeded to post selfies on snapchat.
