The summer sun was like an angry dragon soaring high above the earth; spewing its fire heated breath on the world below. Its unrelenting heat turned David's rental car into an oven waking him from an unplanned sleep. The dragon's glare from the windshield was blinding. David's head pounded like a jack hammer and his mouth was as dry as the Sierra. He was disoriented and weak. An over whelming sense of nausea overcame him and David quickly opened up the passenger side door of the rental car and vomited. Having puked up all he had in his system David settled back in the seat leaving the car door open. The warm but fresh morning air felt reviving and it calmed his stomach.
Closing his eyes David took in a few slow deep breaths. It was then that reality hit him like a wrecking ball. Holy shit, where was Brian, his husband, and why was he waking up in the passage seat of their rental car alone in the hotel parking lot? David retrieved his cell phone from his pants pocket and dialed Brian's number. His call went straight to voicemail signaling Brian's phone had been turned off. David was now more than a little concerned about Brian's whereabouts and what truly happened to the two of them in this parking lot last night.
He and Brian had come to Rome to celebrate their 5th anniversary. They both had always wanted to visit the holy city and now seemed like the perfect time. Brian had just been elected as the local sheriff of Timber Falls and David had just finished his PHD in psychology and was about to open up his own practice. The two had decided now was as good as time as any to take their dream trip before things got to crazy and their schedules would not allow them the time to do so.
Fear and panic began to surge through David's veins as flashes of memory started to flicker through his mind like a bad film in a movie run down theater. Another wave of nausea washed over him as he thought about the previous night's events. He remembered the he and Brian had checked into the hotel and decided to go out to get a bite to eat. They were approached by a young couple probably in their late twenties to early thirties. The woman had alabaster skin with raven black hair. The male had black hair as well with the brightest blue eyes David had ever seen. They both were very attractive and very friendly people.
The young man was named Stephan and the woman's name was Samantha. They had told the boys they were visiting from the states as well and wanted to check out the cities night life and invited the boys to join them. David feeling jet lagged did not feel like hitting the town; however Brian feeling wound up and excited liked the idea. After a brief discussion it was decided that the boys would pass on the invite but might take the couple up on the offer the next evening.
David watched as Stephan and Samantha disappeared around the corner of the hotel. That was the last thing he truly remembered. Climbing out of the car David surveyed the parking lot as well as the surrounding area looking for any sign of Brian. There was no trace of his husband anywhere. None of this made sense; where would he have gone? Neither of the boys had ever been to Rome. Knowing this Brian never would have left David behind; willing that is.
Thinking maybe Brain might have returned to the hotel room for whatever reason, David decided to check there first. The heat from the morning sun was beginning to rise off of the black top and create a hazy like affect. It was either that or David's eyes were still were out of focus. He felt as if he had been drugged or hit in the head with something; who knows maybe both. As he made his way across the scorching parking lot David felt the back of his head where most of the pain was emanating from. Sure enough there was a pretty good sized lump back there. What in the hell had happened he wondered as he made his way around the front entrance of the hotel. David was scared. Something happened in that parking lot and it terrified him that he could not recall anything that might provide answers.
