Carlisle's POV

"Bastard," Alice mutters. I let go of Emmett and roll my eyes.

"I can't say I blame him," I mumur as we walk through the thick layer of auburn leaves coating the ground. "We did cause him great mental - and as he said, physical - pain. That isn't something that is easily forgiven."

"He could have given us a chance! I want him to come home!" Alice cries, and I sigh, running my hands down my face.

"Alice..." I whisper, not daring to look at her. "Do you really think he will come back to us if we apologise?"

"Why wouldn't he?" She inquires with a clueless air. Emmett watches me intently.

I roll my eyes. "He is clearly happy and close to this family. You saw the way they defended him." And I clap Emmett on the shoulder where his scar is from when Tristan bit him. "Besides, I've met them before. They are good, kind people and I would trust them with my life. I'm happy they're the family Edward joined."

"You mean coven," My daughter hisses, I sigh.

"They're more like us than you think," I mutter, walking ahead of them, and breaking into a run.

"How is he?" Esme asks as soon as she sees me entering the house.

I sigh. "Angry, but rightly so."

She looks down, and gives my hand a squeeze before walking out the front door. "Where are you going?" I ask quietly.

"For a walk," She smiles weakly. "I want to be on my own for a bit."

***Esme's POV***

Once I'm deep in the forest I work on picking up Jasper's scent. Once I'm sure I've got it I follow it to a large white house close to the heart of the forest. I walk up to the front door slowly before knocking. I hear his uneven, limping footsteps as he slowly makes his way down the stairs. "Emmett," I hear him warn. "If that's you I'm not interested." Finally the front door opens.

"Esme!" He gasps, throwing his arms around me, losing his balance as he does. I steady him as he clings onto me though. "Come inside," He says, standing back and smiling slightly. Only now do I get a good look at his face.

"Oh, Edward," I whisper, tracing my hands across the barely healed cracks running along the right side of his face. "I'm sorry this happened to you, son."

Edward smiles as much as he can, and invites me inside.
