Chapter 7
It’s hard to believe it’s already Friday afternoon as I lean against my car that’s out front of St. Andrew, waiting for Delilah. Fridays I will pick her up so we can talk about how she is doing with the Casey’s and with school. At St. Andrews the students can wear what they want, but there are strict guidelines that have to be followed.
I see Delilah walking out of the front doors with a small group of kids. For the first time, I see that she actually looks happy. She spots me and waves goodbye and lingers a little with a really cute boy her age. Awe she has a crush; I’m so grilling her when we get to the coffee shop.
“Hey Delilah, you look happy.” I greet her as she walks up.
She is dressed in a pleaded skirt, pale blue polo shirt, and Sherry shoes; she looks like a catholic school girl and I try not to laugh.
“I would be better if I didn’t have to wear these stupid clothes. Why can’t we were jeans and t-shirts?” She groans out and I shake my head.
Walking to my side of my car, I answer, “Because life isn’t fair. Now hop in, I need my caffeine fix.”
She does as she is told and we head to the Starbuck near my apartment. We head in and there is a good group of people drinking coffee and talking. I get the Java Chip Frappuccino and Delilah gets the Iced Chai Tea Latte and we split a double chocolate brownie.
After we get our order, we set at a table near the back where it is quiet so we can talk. There is a flat screen TV next to our table with the local news channel on with Dr. Phil talking about bullying.
“So how was your first week of school? It looked like you made some friends.” I ask and I see a blush on her cheeks form.
She takes a sip of her drink before answering, “It wasn’t so bad. Some of my teachers are nice and I don’t have a ton of homework. I’ve talked to a few people, but I wouldn’t say we are friends.”
“Mrs. Casey said you had a friend stay for dinner Wednesday night; I’ll say that’s a friend. So who was the guy you couldn’t take your eyes off of?” I answer with a smile.
She tries to hide a smile as she says, “His name is Gage and he is in a couple of my classes and he has been really nice to me, nothing more.”
“Delilah and Gage sitting in a tree K-I-S-S-I-N-G. First comes-” I begin singing out and she throws a piece of brownie at me.
“You do not waste chocolate; it’s a crime against human happiness.” I scream out and people look at us with smiles.
Delilah sighs before saying, “You are so weird. Why did I end up with you?”
“First of all I am not weird, I am super-duper cool and deep down in your rebel heart you love me.” I answer with a smirk and she laughs.
We continue to talk as we finish our drinks when breaking news flashes on the screen. I hear someone yell for one of the workers to turn it up and they quickly do so.
“According to officials a body of an unidentified woman was found near Savannah National Wildlife Refuge around 1:30 this afternoon. The body was found by a group of men who were bird watching in an area that is not often visited. We will keep you updated on the story as it develops.” Says an older white guy with a fake tan.
“Do you think it could be related to the woman they found Monday?” Delilah asks and I shrive.
Looking at her, I answer, “God I hope not.”
