Chapter One
I woke up to the sound of my name. Rubbing my eyes with my hands, I cringed at the light coming in through my window. "Gabriella!" My mother called once more.
I groaned and leisurely pulled the covers off the top half of my body. The loss of contact from the heat under the comforters made goose bumps appear on my arms. I wanted to get out of my comfortable bed but I was just too tired. So I sat there staring at the wall for a couple of seconds.
The footsteps outside my door snapped me out of my thoughts. My door swung open revealing my mother. I always admired the way she had long blonde hair that cascaded down her back and bright, baby blue eyes. She was wearing her favorite blue jeans and a white sweater. She was beautiful, but since I'm her adopted daughter I looked nothing like her, the complete opposite actually.
"Gabriella! Come on you'll be late!" She strolled over to the right side of my bed and pulled the covers off the rest of my now cold body. I stood up from my bed mumbling a 'good morning' and walked to the bathroom.
Today was the day of my graduation and it hasn't really hit me yet. I guess that's because it's ten o'clock in the morning. The graduation was at four o'clock today but my mom wanted me awake early so that I had enough time to get ready.
I washed my face, brushed my teeth and made my way to the kitchen. As I traveled down the stairs, I heard two voices talking and my feet stopped. "Yeah, I'll take her." The first voice said. I hesitantly opened the door and stepped through the doorway to see my mom behind the counter and a man in front of it.
"Take me where?" My voice echoed in the kitchen. The voices stopped and the man turned around. I jumped back, surprised at who it was.
It was Sam. His dark chestnut brown hair lay on his forehead and he stood 6'4 feet in the air towering over my 5'4 height. Sam and I are pretty close. He is my best friend after all. But since he is one year older than me, he is supposed to be at college.
I ran up to my best friend and wrapped my arms around his neck. He hesitantly picked up his arms, unsure of what to do with them but then quickly wrapped them around my waist. My head rested in the crook of his neck as I smelled his hair. His hair always seemed to smell so good. "Why are you here?" I questioned eagerly.
"I wasn't going to miss your graduation." Sam replied. I flashed him a smile, thankful that I have such a great friend like him. He wouldn't miss my graduation and that made me adore him more.
"So where are you taking me?" I became curious.
"The salon."
"You're going to the salon with me?" I questioned him in disbelief. Normally my mother would come to the salon with me but having Sam offer is odd.
"Yeah I'm going to curl my hair and get some extensions." Sam mocked in a girly voice, obviously joking. I playfully smacked him on the arm.
"You're a retard." I teased him. He smirked in return.
"I was going to take you but Sam offered instead." My mother said from the corner of the kitchen.
After getting dressed and grabbing my purse, I walked to the door, about to leave. Just as I was about to touch the metal of the doorknob, I felt a pair of hands pulled be backwards. I watched as Sam came up behind me and pulled the door open. "Thanks." I smiled at him.
He returned the smile and held the door open for me. We walked down the path of the driveway together. I slid into the passenger seat and watched as Sam buckled his seatbelt and started the car.
10 minutes into the silent - but not awkward - car ride, I spoke up. "I'm thinking about dying my hair blonde." I've always wanted hair like my mom's. I guess when your little you want to be just like the person you look up to.
