I froze, turning slowly around.
Icy eyes greeted mine as I backed slowly away.
"Now, explain to me very carefully, Mr. Linton, why you are rifling through my files which are scattered all over the floor?" Mr. Ambrose said, glaring at me with those dark, impenetrable eyes.
I giggled. Not those cute, feminine giggles women were suppose to make, but those kind of fearful-but-I'm-pretending-I-am-brave kind of giggles.
"Uh, I totally wasn't looking at my file that you wrote, which was quite creepy by the way you stalked me, and I am totally unfazed right now by the fact that you got Karim to hurt and maim my suitors, and I totally wasn't feeling - " I stopped abruptly, realising I had almost made a slip.
It's okay, Lilly. You weren't doing anything wrong.
The annoying voice in my head whispered back, "Yes you were! Yes you were! Liar, liar, pants on fire!"
Blast! Even I couldn't unconvince myself of that!
Mr. Ambrose stalked closer, his gait predatory.
"You weren't feeling...what exactly?" His soft, cold voice said next to my ear.
I hadn't realized how close we were until his shoes stepped on me.
"Ow!"
I know, you probably weren't expecting that. I thought I would feel the sensual brush of his lips, or something more, romantic. Instead, his shoes promptly crushed my feet, and I fell backwards, groaning.
Damn, was this what my poor suitors felt when I was dancing with them? No wonder they retreated! Or it might just be Mr. Ambrose.
I turned a baleful gaze on mr, Ambrose, and caught a infinitesimal sliver of triumph glitter in his eyes before that stone mask snapped back into place.
That son of a bachelor!
"I'll show you what!" I growled, all previous embarrassment flushed out of my system.
I stomped up to his arrogant person, eyes burning holes into his forehead.
"You do not disrespect a lady, You do not trod on her feet even though she has stamped on countless of other poor people, and most of all, you do not come into your office and yell at me for breaking your files!"
Only after I had said that did I realize how immature and stupid I sounded.
I took a deep breath to calm myself.
Mr. Ambrose merely stared at me, unfazed by my outburst.
"What?!" I huffed out.
He raised an eyebrow, "You tell me, you're the one in my office."
I put my nose in my air and sniffed disdainfully, stalking away and plopping myself on the sofa. He did have a point. But then I realized, he couldn't yell at me, because I was saving his secrets!
"Lord Dagliesh was going to interrogate me, torture me, then kill me! I saved your ass, so I expect a pay raise and cookies for your utmost gratefulness,"
Ha, take that, you little -
"Oh, please, what secrets do you know?" he interrupted me, smirking a little.
I paused. He was right, what financial secrets or power did I have?
The answer came to me in a flash: Zero.
I gulped.
"Well, he was still going to interrogate me, torture me, and kill me too!" I defended myself.
Mr. Ambrose just tapped his foot impatiently.
"All right, all right, I overreacted. But, still..."
I peeked at him under my lashes, sprouting all me womanly charm, which consisted of not stomping on his feet, screaming like a banshee, or bashing his brains in.
Mr. Ambrose remained unimpressed.
"C'mon! At least say something nice to a heart broken lady!" I pleaded with him, hoping to gain any sympathy. Hey, I was acting for his interests!
Or maybe Lilly, it's in your interest to give an excuse to see Mr. Ambrose again.
I clenched my teeth. People say it's your heart that rebells, but blast this, this is my mind!
Mr. Ambrose, completely unaware of this internal battle, sad noncommittally, "I will show sympathy when I actually see a lady."
I gnashed my teeth together furiously. Now he was going to far!
"How dare you conniving wench dare - (insert bloody cusses here)!" After I had said, no, screamed out all those lovely curses and obscenities I had learned from my extensive travels, I reverted back to my normal self.
"I mean, what do you expect me to do! Lord Dagliesh was probably going to propose to me as a last resort if I didn't talk (Okay, I was exaggerating here, but it was possible. Lord Dagliesh was going to marry me, then probably bump me off a few months later! My aunt won't miss me though, she would be glad that a scandal would be attached to my name), and that's even worse than tort - "
I didn't finish my sentence, because a certain man's eyes lit up with fire, and strode over to me in one long stride. Then, he swept me, the damsel in distress, into his arms and slammed his lips onto mine.
