Cassidy Wilcox
(the bestfriend)When Cas told me about the e in pine trees I realized other people had letters too. And if they had one letter of the alphabet that was capitalized there were probably nine letters. Nine letters means nine people.
I called Mrs. Payne.
“Hi Mrs. Payne. I was wondering about the letters that Laila wrote. Do you have the names of the people you sent it to?”
“I have the receipt. Could you hold on for a minute. I have it here somewhere.” I heard her put the phone down. I held my breath hoping she wouldn’t ask why I needed them. I didn’t want to lead her on and have her be disappointed at the end when this all turned out to be fake.
The phone rustled and I heard her voice. “ Hon, do you have a pen? There are nine people on this list.”
I scrambled to find piece of paper and gave her a yes.
“Cassidy Wilcox, Austin Weber, Kylie Larson, Caspian Lee, Jenna Hayle, Mr. Kaleb Swartz and Lacie Hall,” she paused.
“Are there more?” I counted the numbers on the list. “ You said there were more.”
“Oh. Right. Logan Pine and Bryce Parson. That's it.”
“Thank you.”
“Your welcome. Cassi-” I cut her off before she could ask me about the names. Yes I felt guilty, but it was ok. She didn’t need to know. She didn't need to have her hopes crushed down after reality pummels down on us.
