I walked through the dirty corridor and saw Mother sitting at the table. Her face was deadly pale and her lips were a tight, unsmiling line of unspoken words.
"What is it Mother?" I asked.
"Darling, your Father has taken a turn for the worse"
A few weeks back...
I ran across our field to bring my father his lunch. It consisted of a slice of stale bread with a slither of cheese and a bucket of slightly greenish water. When I reached his resting place, the rock that he usually sat on was empty and his pipe was cracked in half, lying next to the rock.
"Father!? Faaaather!" I shouted and heard a quiet reply.
"Here I am, my child. Down in the trench."
"Where can he be?" I thought and looked behind the rock. A small trench was there and my darling father was lying in it, his legs and arms lying around him at strange angles.
"What has happened Father? Oh, never mind. I'll fetch Mother!" I screamed with a shaky voice and ran back home.
"Mother, Mother!!! Father has had an accident and I think he broke all his limbs!!!" I shouted and burst into helpless tears.
"Oh Annie! Where is he? Take me to him this instant and get your sister to fetch Mr Nicholson (A/N for your information Mr Nicholson is a very educated man that studies plants that can be used to cure people in the village.)!!!" Mother screamed back at me and started sobbing.
"Yes Mother." I replied through my tears. "Alicia! Go fetch Mr Nicholson right now! It's very important!" I yelled and James called back:
"I can go and and fetch Mr Nicholson! We are very good friends."
He is so sweet but I need Alicia to do it.
"Alicia do what I said this instant or else..."
~~~
I led Mother through the field, all the way to the trench. She lent over Father and kissed him on both cheeks. She looked back at me, blushing.
"What are you staring at girl? Can't you see this is a very dangerous situation?" She said. "Go and find you sister with Mr Nicholson and bring him here. Oh pray to God almighty that Robert is all right."
I nodded and ran for Mr Nicholson and Alicia, sobbing quietly in the depths of my soul.
2 hours later...
"All of his limbs are broken and he has deep cuts in several parts of his body. The chances that he'll get out of this are small, but leave him to me for the next 2 months and I'll do the best I can do heal him." Mr Nicholson whispered. "He will also need the newest medicine so you have to find some spare money for that."
"Oh Mother! What will we do?" I said and cried. Mother hid her pale face in her harsh, red hands and cried her heart out.
Back to the present...
Mother's eyes welled up with tears and her cheeks turned a peachy, rose colour. A single tear slid down her soft cheek.
"Mother, what do we do now? The money has almost run out and we still have to buy Father's medicine! You can't work, you have to look after James!" I wailed in exasperation, not knowing what to do.
"Yes my child." she swallowed "You will have to work. You are leaving tomorrow on the morning milk train. You will alight at London National Hospital, do you hear me? Then you will go right, left and cross the road. Then you will see a huge, grand building and you will walk inside and introduce yourself at the reception. Say that you've come to work as a nurse and always say that you are 14. You look so." She finished and my face was stuck in an "O" of horror.
"But... But Mother!"
"No buts my girl. You will do as I said. Now lets wash you and get you ready for London." She sid grandly.
"Yes Mother." I said and saw mg life fall apart in front of my eyes. And I couldn't do anything.
Later...
"Ouch Mother! That hurtsssss!!!" I said as Mother scrubbed my hair viciously with her long nails. She was using up our supply of carbolic soap on myself! Then she took a bucket, filled it up with water and spilt it over my head.
I was standing in the lake wearing only my drawers and mother was washing me. Alicia was told to stay put and keep any boys and men away from my washing place.
She scrubbed my arms and legs and then cleaned my clothes. She had sewn a very beautiful dress for me earlier on. It was a silky grey, long all the way down to the tips of my toes and long sleeved. It was buttoned down all the way with small, silver fastenings. The sleeves where puffy ay the joints so it was easier for me to move my arms in them. Finally the dress ended in white lace.
"Thank you Mother! It is so very beautiful!" I gasped in delight, forgetting about my worries for a moment.
"You are welcome my child. Now put it on quick, lets see if it fits you."
I put on the petticoat that Mother gave me and slipped the dress over it. I did the buttons up and Mother admired me. Then she took the gem necklace that she got from Father when they married, off and held it in her hands.
"You will need it darling. For luck." She whispered and did the clasp around my neck.
"Thank you so much Mother! You have got absolutely no idea how much that necklace means to me!" I said in a shaky, high pitched voice.
"You are welcome my darling. Now take the dress and petticoat off and put your night dress back on, now back to bed." She said and smiled slightly.
"Yes Mother." I said and did as I was told.
