THANK YOU everyone who has been following this story it means alot!
We had been sitting there for a while now. I was kind of hoping Dr. Ralfin, I still don't think I should call him by his first name, would give up and just go back to the dinner with everyone else. I had no such luck, however. Dr.Ralfin cleared his throat and I glanced up from the ground. "Mae?" He asked cautiously.
"Hmm?" I keep staring at that ground, studying it like it's the most fascinating thing in th world. It really is interesting the way the light from the moon hits is causing shadows. How each individual pebble has its own personality. I decide to name each of the pebbles, really not wanting to talk about my embarrassingly pathetic story. I'll call you Rob, and you Marble, and you can be Pinny and that can be your twinny Pip-squeak, I think to myself as I motion with my finger to each one.
"Mae? You were going to tell me what's wrong?" He speaks to me in a calming voice, trying to coax me out of my shell. It isn't going to work though. I keep naming pebbles. Kale. Haylayla. Charlie Nolania. Noodles. Biscuitz. Fancy-Supa Mommy. Bacon Scrappy. I keep coming up with the most out there names. All the time I've been naming my pebbles Jassiah has been trying to get me to speak, but I just ignore him. Something touches my shoulder, while I'm in the middle of trying to find a fitting name for my next pebble, an almost square one that's slightly bigger than the others, and I jump up snapping, "Don't touch me."
Dr. Ralfin holds his hands up in a sign of surrender, "Sorry. I didn't mean to freak you out. I was just trying to get your attention." He pats a spot on the bench next to him. "Sit back down, please." I eye the seat and him for a minute before resigning and sitting next to him. I make sure there is plenty of space between the two of us though. "Calm down, I'm not going to bite, Mae."
I sigh. "I know." I'm messing with the zipper on my jacket now. I scold myself, Stop it! He's gonna think you like him that was or something!
No he won't.
If I keep acting like a freaking shy school girl and playing with my jacket he might!
No! You haven't given him reason too. In fact he probably thinks you hate him. The way you act toward really gives off that vibe.
Good point self... Wait am I talking to my self?
Yes. Well, actually your having a conversation with your conscience or at least at part of it.
Jeeze. I need mental help. Anyway bye self. Imma name you Kaylie by the way.
Bye!
"Mae? Hello are you there?!" I look up to see Dr. Ralfin's worried face in front of mine.
Shooting my head back and accidentally slamming it into the wall behind me I reply. "Yes, I'm here. Now if you'll excuse me." I push him aside and start jumping up and down holding my head. "Ahh flipping fudge nuggets! Who put that fridging wall behind me?! Why the hell did you have to scare that capin' crunch outta me and make me slam my head into a." I pause and look at the wall. "A brick wall?!" I stop shouting and take a few deep breaths.
"Mae, I didn't mean to scare the. What did you call it? Capin' Crunch?" I nod silently rubbing the back of my head. "I didn't mean to scare the captain crunch out of you, I was trying to get your attention. For the second time tonight I might add."
