"Your sister needs a name. What do you think it should be son?"
"How about Meghan?"
"I think Meghan is a fine name."
Rain tapped lightly against the window, Meghan sat still reading her book but would occasionally look up to see Joshua still trying to cook the rabbit he had caught. She thought that the life they were living was pathetic and she desperately wanted out of it, the scars on her wrist were a clear sign of that. She always felt as if there wasn't ever going to be an end to the constant pile of shit the world just kept taking on them. Her thoughts of ending it all had come and gone recently but she still didn't like living the way they were, it wasn't really worth it anymore. All the supply runs, seemed pointless and dealing with that group down the road was becoming more and more dangerous.
Joshua kept on turning the piece of wood the rabbit was on but the fire was slowly dying.
"Damn this fire." He said, shaking his head slightly as he looked at the flickering flames that refused to rise any higher.
"Jesus it's cold, put some more wood on that thing will ya?" Meghan whined and shook her head, already feeling chills run across her arms.
"Okay boss." Joshua said, putting another log onto the fire, as well as bit more fire starter in hopes that the fire would warm up a bit more and cook the rabbit a bit faster.
Joshua moved back and watched as the fire slowly came back to life. He smiled before turning to look at Meghan who had a faint but prominent smile painted across her lips. He got up off the ground grabbed his jacket before walking over and putting it over Meghan's shoulders.
"Thanks Joshie." She said happily and tightly wrapped the jacket around her smaller frame.
"Yeah, yeah." Joshua said and shook his head before getting up and walking to the kitchen.
Meghan watched Joshua walk around the house for a moment, he seemed almost lost in the small house they had been staying at for around a year. Meghan tilted her head to the side before biting her bottom lip.
"Looking for something?" Meghan asked with a slightly confused tone of voice, raising an eyebrow as she watched her brother.
"Yeah, something nice but useful. It's for Derek. He's tired of giving me shit for free." Joshua said and began looking through the cupboards.
"If I don't give him something he's gonna come and take what he wants." Joshua said and shook his head, knowing that they would have to move and soon, otherwise they would always be in danger of Derek and his gang.
"God, I hate that guy. He's such an asshole."
Meghan had only met Derek and his crew once, that was all Joshua would allow. They had all tried hitting on her and that would not fly on Joshua's watch. He never allowed Derek or anyone to come anywhere near the house for fear that they would try and do something to his sister.
After a moment of looking around Joshua finally gave up and a took a seat on the old kitchen chair. His eyes drifted from Meghan to the front door. He imagines what would've happen if he hadn't ever decided to stay at he cabin when he had found it. Joshua looked at his arm, seeing an old wound that never quite healed right and now there was an odd shaped scar where it once was. He looked at Meghan and his mind wandered back to few days after she was born, when he helped his father name her. He smiled, the memory bringing back good feelings, feelings that he would never forget.
He was about to walk over and check on the fire but he heard Meghan groan out in annoyance.
"Why don't you come sit down over here? Quit being a loner over there, ya little shit." Meghan called out and laughed before shaking her head slightly at Joshua.
