The Odds

Walking home that afternoon from school it was still raining. I had stayed for awhile after school to work on some late projects I had forgotten about and it was already becoming dark. Wind blew strong, making the trees shift in its presence and the leaves whispered. I walked relatively alone on my way home since Cheyenne and Amy had already headed home. The day had passed in a blur without  importance of any kind until this very moment.

" Hi." I hear a dark voice echo

I whirl around to the dark eyes once more.

" Louis, uh-" I manage to say before he silences me with his own words, which are traced with an almost viscous tone.

" I'm lost."

I shift to the side, studying him. Messy, untamed brown hair and sea green eyes, all black apparall except for 2 die  that he held in his long, skeleton like fingers.

" I'm sorry but I'm not sure how, I mean you're only a block away from the school..." I trailed off, heart pounding

" I don't know, will you help me?" His tone changing suddenly to high pitched, innocent and scared, something like a child's

" Um, where did you live?" I said shakily

He stared at me, sinking into a slump. Eyes wide and unblinking he began to fiddle with die in his hands, without saying much of a word and instead muttering to himself. I sigh, I had no idea why he was being like this.

" I want to go home." He cried out, tears streaming down his face.

" Come home with me, we'll phone your parents." I said nervously, trying to figure out what was wrong with the usually unnerving, dark teenage boy

He looked up, reaching his arm out for my hand. I took his hand despite the discomfort it brought me.

" My parents are gonna be mad.." He said, tears still running down his pale cheeks

I began to walk with him, trying to decipher his mumbles and hushed whispers which all seemed to be childish, silly or odd comments. Then suddenly without his sobs or muttering making his words unaudible he said something clear.

" Do you want to fly?"

I stared at him, wondering if he was talking to me or himself.

" Sure, I guess." I replied

" I want to."

I nodded, trying not say anything to upset him or anger him. When we got to my house, he ran up the steps and began to pound violently on my doorbell. I grabbed his hand, I knew the house was empty but I would rather not have to explain why our doorbell was broken by a strange boy who I didn't know. I grabbed my keys and unlocked to the door, he raced in, crashing down on my sofa. He curled up like a small animal and grabbed the blanket that was draped over the side.

" What are you-" Before I could finish he spoke,

" My mommy and daddy phone number is in the big yellow book." He giggled before disappearing underneath the blankets.

I stood there, shocked. Mommy and Daddy?! He was 15 atleast! Still cautious of him, I didn't bother trying to get a phone number out of him. I flipped through the phone book till I found the Tomlinson's. Dialling the number, I paced back and forth in my kitchen which was lite dimly by the last bits of sunlight. Finally they answered.

" Hello?"

" Um hi, I believe your son is lost, he approached me on the street and started to panic so I brought back to my house."

" Oh my lord, thank goodness. Louis has been wondering off lately." A female voice replied,

" I'll be over to get him. You mind telling me your address?"

I told her my address and hung up after being thanked. I yawned, pulling my hair up with a spare elastic that was in my pocket and sat at the end of the sofa. Louis began to squirm and  I realized quickly he was fast asleep. I didn't know what would be worse, a sleeping, slightly crazy boy asleep on my couch or a slightly crazy boy awake in my house. I chose the first and decided to keep him asleep till his mom arrived.

About 15 minutes later I heard a car pull in to my driveway and a knock on the door, I hurried over and opened it quickly. A middle aged woman with brown hair smiled at me,

" Um I'll go get him." I blurted before running back over to Louis,

"Louis.." I shake him lightly but he seemed still fast asleep.

Finally waking him up he groggily ran over to his mom, who looked at me kindly.

" Thanks once again."

"No problem." I smiled, closing the door, watching them head down the steps.

After this whole bizarre situation, I decided to lay down. Curling up just as Louis had, falling into a quiet slumber.

I had know idea what time it was but I knew it was late at night when I woke up in my living room. Darkness surrounded me except for the lamp next to the sofa. Before deciding to fall asleep once again, I reach behind me and pull out two small objects, shadowed in the darkness.

The two die.

I placed them on the bedside table and fell back to my sleeping state.

One detail I had not noticed was that, both die were covered in dried blood.
