I walk into Ray's house at exactly 3:30. I had homework to finish. Don't judge. Mrs. Wilkins greets me in the hallway.
"Oh, Briar! How are you?" she exclaims cheerfully.
"Umm... I'm fine," I whisper, looking at my feet. Yes, I have met Ray's mom before, but it's been a while and I get shy when someone is this excited around me. She smiles warmly.
"Well still quiet, I see. Ray's up in his room. If you kids get peckish you know you're always welcome to the fridge and pantry. But I don't want to take any more time away from you two. I'll be going." she picks up her laundry basket. "Nice to see you again, Briar!" she merrily walks down into her basement. I walk upstairs. Ray's newly painted grey door opens as I get up to it.
"You're late," he says, crossing his arms. I walk in and look around. He's standing in front of a light blue fold-out bed. There are multiple glasses of water and other random objects like rocks and glass sculptures scattered on his desk. There are flower pots full of dirt along the dark grey wall and a fire extinguisher in the corner of the tiled floor. That must be for me. Ray sits down in his bed and I sit next to him.
"Sorry Ray. I had to finish writing my English paper. Ms. Barley gave us so much to write."
He sighs. "It's ok. Let's just get started. Fawn has soccer until five o'clock so it'll be just you and me for a while. Besides, I don't think she needs the practice." He stands up and reaches out his hand for me to grab it. I blush and take his hand, letting him help me up.
"So. Besides fire, what other powers do you have?"
"I think I can teleport things. I tried to 'use the force' last night because I wanted the remote and didn't want to get up, but it worked... kinda. I reached out my hand," I say, doing the same. "Focused on the object," I whisper, looking at a rock on his desk. "And just did it." All of a sudden the rock appears in my hand in a cloud of black smoke. I pick it up, and it falls apart into a bunch of smaller pieces. I sigh. "The same thing happened to the remote." I look down in embarrassment. My red and black hair falls over my face.
"It's ok," he says gently, putting his hand in my shoulder. I smile. Ray takes the rock pile from my hand and picks out one, setting it on the table. "Just start small and work your way up to the bigger stuff." I hold out my hand again and focus not only on the small rock but on keeping it whole. My eyes close and I breathe in and out slowly. I imagine the rock appearing in my hand. My eyes open. Black smoke swirls around the rock and then it goes into my hand. I pick it up with my other hand and smile.
"It didn't fall apart!" I say with glee. Ray chuckles.
"Good! Let's continue working on our powers. You never know... we could have tons more!"
Yeah, I know this one's shorter, but the next chapter is going to be really long and I don't want to be mean and give y'all a cliffhanger. So I hope you enjoyed my story so far!
*hugs*
