"Are you sure you can't stay longer?" Ray asks me. I sigh. I really do want to, but I hate walking home in the dark.
"Sorry, Ray. We'll hang out tomorrow. Yes, we know what powers we have but we need to perfect them. If there was an emergency? There would be no time to think about what to do."
Ray half-smiles. "Ok. I'll see you guys tomorrow at school." Fawn and I wave goodbye and start to walk away. As we walk how the street we chat about random stuff. We get to her house and stop.
Fawn turns to me. "Hey, Briar. Do you want a flower crown? I think I can make one so it doesn't dry out or die."
I smile. "Sure! Thank you!" She waves her hand over my head which isn't a difficult task since in shorter than her. I'm not that short, just a year younger than her. As Ray says, I'm "freakishly smart" so I skipped a grade. I feel a small weight on my head. I close my eyes, making a hand mirror appear in my hand. Looking in the mirror, I gasp. It's a beautiful crown, thick with dark green leaves and the fullest and brightest red and black roses I've ever seen. It's so beautiful.
Fawn smiles. "I know. I knew the roses would go perfectly with your black hair and fair skin." She sighs. "It is beautiful."
I look at her in confusion. "I agree, but I didn't say anything."
Fawn looks confused. "Yes, you did. I clearly heard you say 'it's so beautiful."
That's weird.
"I know!" She exclaims.
I step back. "Hold up. Let me test something. When you hear my voice, think of your voice saying something." I hold my mouth closed. The flower crown has red and black roses.
Fawn's eyes widen. I hear her say, that flower crown looks beautiful on you.
I breathe. "Telepathy."
Fawn nods. "I wonder if it works over long distances."
"There's only one way to find out. Once I get home I'll try to talk to you."
Fawn grins in excitement. "This is so cool!" Fawn's phone beeps, signaling that she got a text. She turns on her phone and checks her messages. "It's my mom. She wants me to call her." Fawn quickly dials the number. "Mom? Yeah... I know... me and Briar."
I look at her. Briar and I...
She glares at me playfully. I heard that. I roll my eyes. "Yeah, Mom. Ok... I'm coming. Ok... bye." She turns to me and sighs. "I gotta go. My mom thinks I'm at your house to study and wants to know why I'm out so late."
"Ok. See you tomorrow." I turn and teleport to my house. My mom is a doctor and my dad is a nurse, so they normally aren't home until super late. It's good to see my parents aren't conforming to gender stereotypes, though. I unlock the door and immediately get attacked by a fluffy and slobbery dog.
"Baxter! Get off! I haven't even stepped into the house yet!" I say between giggles. My two-year-old german shepherd gets off me but continues to lick me. "Have you missed me, boy? Were you hungry?" I coo at him. He spins around once and barks at me. I giggle. "Ok, ok. I'm coming."
I walk over to the kitchen, turning the lights on as I go. When I fill Baxter's food, he sniffs it and takes a couple of nibbles. I kneel and inspect him. "You ok, Bax? Normally you would inhale your food before I'm even finished filling it."
"Sorry. I fed him already." says a voice behind me. "He just looked so hungry."
I scratch Baxter's belly. "It's ok," I say absentmindedly. My eyes widen. I'm an only child and my parents are at the hospital. I reach out to make a knife appear, but I stop. I don't want this intruder to know that I have powers.
