So this is a new one I recently wrote. I'm not sure how I'm going to do this. I love to tell the stories behind these babies but I also want you to be able to experience the poem in your own way. So, for now I'll just post the poem but if anyone would like the backstory comment below and I'll gladly post. Please, please, please like comment and share. Enjoy!
You remind me of the tomato plants in my grandfather's greenhouse
because like you, they seemed to defy all his carefully laid guides.Like you, they reached for the sun despite everything around them.Pushed past every helping hand, every shelf built in their way.
I have my grandfather's hands now. Trying to tend to something
that doesn't need my help anymore.
I have my grandfather's heart now. Stubbornly loving the leaves on a plant
that didn't grow according to plan. I don't recognize it now.
You remind me of transplanting flowers in my father's greenhouse
because like you, there was no formula for getting them
from one pot to the next. Sometimes it was a complete mess
with broken leaves and broken hearts and dirty shoes.
I have my father's hands now, wary when touching
something he loved, always too afraid of breaking it.
I have my father's mind now, stubborn. So that pushing past the hurt
meant growing another plant, trying all over again.
