It has been hours.
Sitting up from my laying position on the floor, the dark sky outside seemed nearly starless. I had never seen anything like it in my life. How was it possible for there to be so few stars in the sky? What had happened to them?
I crawled across the bed in front of the window with only my knees, my hands still cuffed behind my back. A sneer grew on my lips at that truth, and I let my head fall heavily against the side of the window, looking out on the grass of the yard. Everything in this place smelled rotten. The town was literally crawling with people--more than I had ever seen in a single place even in my wildest dreams. A Shadow could live in this realm for an eternity and still be unable to feed on the last of them. Sustained life until death. That was what this place offered him.
But I know nothing. He thought, lowering his eyes as he felt the girl moving. Was she finally coming? Water. He heard running water. Out of nowhere. And then it stopped. The girl paused, and then was walking to him. Her mother left in the opposite direction.
The door opened slowly behind him, and he did not move. Fear wafted through the room as the girl entered, and as the door closed behind her, he knew that she had thought this through. Any sensible human would have left the door open for escape.
She was here to talk.
