I woke up to the sound of my phone ringing and sat up groggy. I looked at the clock, who would be calling at four in the morning? I looked at the caller I.D. and saw it was my mom, immediately I suspected something bad happened. "Hello? Mom? Are you okay?"
"Ye-yeah? Kara i'm fine, are you alright? You sound scared," I let out a breath of relief.
"It's four here, mom," I laughed a little and rubbed my eyes.
"Oh, sorry, honey. I'm not to good with the time zones,"
"It's okay. Anyway, what were you calling for?"
"I just wanted to say hi. I'll be home tonight, but only for tonight and then I have to catch my flight tomorrow morning,"
"Oh, okay," I was used to my mom leaving a lot, it was for the best.
"Don't sound so sad Kara, I know it's hard being alone all the time but I need to work. I want to see you get into a good college,"
"I know," There was a silence for a few seconds until she spoke up.
"Do you have any plans for tonight?"
"No, I don't think so. Why?"
"I just want to spend time with you before I leave,"
"I thought you said you wouldn't be traveling as much, because of your promotion," I heard let out a long sigh.
"I know Kara, but this sale is extremely important. We can do whatever you want tonight," I touched the necklace Josh gave me last night and smiled to myself.
"Can my boyfriend come over? I think you should meet him, he's a great guy,"
"Yo-your what? You have a boyfriend?"
"Yeah, as of last night. He took me out to dinner and bought me a necklace and asked me out. We've been hanging out a lot lately, he's amazing."
My mom let out a small laugh, "He sure sounds like it. Who is it?' A took a deep breath knowing my mom wouldn't enjoy the fact of my dating Josh, she didn't even want me to be friends with him.
"Uh.. Josh. Myers." There was another silence.
"Kara... You know how I feel about that boy,"
"I know mom, but give him a chance. He's changed, I promise,"
"I just think you could do better, you deserve better,"
I was starting to get angry with her but I told myself to stay calm. "Mom, just let him come over tonight and you can talk. You can see that he's different now,"
"Okay, okay. Fine,"
"Thank you mom. I'm going to go back to bed now, I'll talk to you later, okay?"
"Alright, love you. Bye." I hung up and rolled back over and fell asleep.
Around noon I got text from Mia telling me to go to her house for a surpirse. I asked her what it was but she wouldn't tell me. I put on a pair of leggings, a loose t-shirt, and a pair of Vans. I braided my hair to the side and brushed my teeth then sent a text to Mia telling her I'd be there in a couple minutes.
She was already waiting at the front door of her house when I got there, a big smile plastered across her face.
"Kara!" I heard my name but it wasn't Mia who yelled it. I turned around to look at my house, there was my dad standing on my front porch. He was shaking his head no but I couldn't tell what it meant.
"Kara!" This time is was Mia.
"Oh, Mia, I left something at my house. I'll be right back-"
"No, no, no. Come on, this will only take a couple minutes." She grabbed my wristed and pulled me into her house. I followed her into her living room where I saw Skylar sitting in chair.
