It was Wednesday, the finally awaited day of exchange. You had spent 3 years in Korea inside the dorms of your cozy university, made plenty of friends, and lived life to the fullest. You had no regrets, except for your love life which had seemed to take a different turn. Throughout your university days you've been too busy with studies that you thought there was no time for falling in love yet. Your heart sank whenever you heard couples act cutely around you yet you still kept your cool. On this very day it was time for you to move to Japan due to some exchange policy shared within both countries 'educational systems. The university you were in, apparently had this policy as well. You were excited to visit the country that you love, so you packed and headed to the Airport almost directly.
"Flight no.320 to Tokyo, Haneda is now boarding. Please head to gate no.6" Your heart fluttered as if it had wings, as you ran towards the gate. You were with a group of friends each excited for their own reasons, but definitely not like you were. Your feet directly lead you to gate no.6 where you had checked in your passport and entered.
"How different is Japan from Korea? "you wondered as you walked into the passageway connecting to the Airplane. People always said those two were quite different, but you still wanted to see it for yourself. After you sat in your seat, it only took a couple of hours to reach your destination .As instructed you went to the teacher responsible for your group in the trip and she started explaining the point of the trip to everyone." Annyeonghaseyo everyone. I hope each one of you is feeling well after this sort of turbulence-filled trip! " she gave off a laugh the resumed her speech.
"So since this is an experience trip. It means that we as a university want from you as a student to acquire the best possible experience while here in Japan,so that it can help you in the future while working in any country .So basically , you might ask how does this work? Or with which university are we having this "experience" exchange. Well, let me explain briefly the situation. Each one of you will pick a card from this box, corresponding to the university he /she will attend during this one year exchange. 3 only can be able to go to the same university." everyone let a loud gasp.
"Now!NOW! It is not that bad. This is more like the best way we had to come up with in order for this to look more like a real life situation ok? Oh and one more thing. After taking out a card, a number will be written under it. This number will be what will lead you to your Japanese apartment-student mate. Once you step out of here to the arrival section's exit you will find a person carrying the number you have. That person will be your apartment mate, who is a student too but unlike you guys, a student who is taking his/her Masters rather than Bachelors in your same university." Everyone listened intently and approached the teacher to draw out cards in a nice apparent order. You followed and took a deep breath as you reached the box filled with multiple cards.
"Go ahead" the teacher said as she smiled at you. You nodded and chose a protruding card from the middle batch. As you unfolded the card "Keio University - No. 7395" Your eyes widened at the university's name. "Keio?! Isn't that the same one.." you shook your head at your thought and denied it with another "Meh. Probably not. I mean, he graduated.Duh?" You ignored your seemingly unreasonable thought and headed towards the exit after picking up your luggage. Heading out, your eyes widened at the amount of people waiting. "Ugh. So much. Where can I find that number now?" You heaped out a long sigh.
Then, having no choice you squinted your eyes in search of that number. In between the loads of crowd your eyes finally met with that cardboard holding your number. The person was carrying it with his /her left hand carelessly. "That person is tall he or she could have bothered to lift it a bit higher." You thought ,annoyed by that mere fact as you walked toward that person."Ya!! The way you're carrying it! It took me forever to find it you know!My poor eyes."
The person looked at you, he was wearing one of those surgical masks that Japanese people usually tend to wear.
