My eyes opened as I felt an unfamiliar bed beneath me, rough and sturdy. I immediately turned in the direction of a person's presence, having sensed another vampire in the room.
"Oh, you're awake, young prince. I'll go get your mother." The male said as he walked out of the room.
The candles were warm and created quite a bit of light as I looked around. I knew where I was now, I was in the castle's personal medical room. What was I doing here? Did I get hurt or something? I looked down at my arms and realized they were covered in bandages. That was odd, I didn't feel any pain as I moved them. It must have been that man. My thoughts were interupted as my mother and the mysterious man walked in the room.
"Alexander! You're alright! Thank goodness!" My mother said, her voice full of relief as she ran to hug me.
Her embrace was a bit too much, I couldn't move, and I had to tell her to calm down and that I was alright. The mysterious man was looking at me weirdly. I don't think I had ever seen someone look at me like that, so I couldn't decide whether it was creepy or not. His eyes locked with mine and he gave me a gentle smile. Hmm, strange. My mother noticed me eyeing the man in curiousity and confusion, and decided to clear things up.
"Alex, this man here is...your doctor. He helped your bleeding stop since yesterday's incident..." her voice becoming a little soft and coughed, "Well, he's also been the one supplying the medications for your heats. You should thank him."
My mind drifts off to yesterday's events and I feel the sadness return as I hear my dad's words echo in my head. Coughing from my mother made me return to reality and finish her given task.
"Oh, thank you... sir." I say trying to sound normal.
"No need to thank me. It's a pleasure helping you out, your highness."
I think I had misheard, but that "your highness" was a bit strange. I still didn't know what to make of this man, so I decided to analyze him. Hmm, I must admit that he was good looking, but something about the way he looked at me with his gray eyes was a little strange. I still couldn't tell if this vampire's stare was good or not. He caught my eye and smiled once again. Was this something he usually did? My thoughts were interrupted as I heard my mother's voice.
"Alexander, I think now you can return to your room and finish that paperwork I asked you to finish, right Doctor Samuel?"
Something about the way my mother looked at him expectantly sparked a bit of curiousity. Maybe he had been my family's doctor for a long time and the expectance for him to do well was at a high level.
"Yes, my queen, he's in perfectly good condition."
There was that same expression on his face. I got up, but still didn't feel any pain. I had to admit that he had done a really good job because yesterday hurt like being stabbed a million times. I'd have to thank him personally. I walked out the room and saw him smile once more, except this time, the corner of his mouth was a bit higher.
With my mother beside me, I walked back to my room. She smiled as she saw I wasn't experiencing any pain.
"It really is great to have a doctor, especially one that is an alpha." She said to me, explaining how he was really good at healing.
My mom went on and on about how he had an amazing healing ability that was able to heal any sort of complicated wounds, even those that would usually cause an immediate death. It must be lucky to be an alpha. I still have no idea why my father decided to quit living his life. Had it been all my fault? Or was it something else? My mom kept talking with a smile on her face. Did she not know about my father leaving? I decided to ask her myself.
"Mom?"
"Yes, Alex?"
"Do you know about da-"
My question was interrupted by her sudden gasp.
"Oh, I almost forgot," my mom having remembered something, "I have some important documents to sign. You can finish your papers."
"Yes, I'll get to it." I said a little disappointed as she turned and hurried to her study.
I guess my plan didn't work out. How was it that she didn't know? Maybe she did, but wanted to seem happy around me in order to reassure me. I think it was all my imagination, but my mother seemed happier than usual. I really do think she was clueless about my father's actions. At least, I hoped so.
I walked down into my bedroom. It was spotless; it looked like yesterday hadn't happened at all. It couldn't have been my imagination. Even my mother knew of this incident. I look towards my desk and look at the immense pile of 'paperwork'. Looks more like torture, if you ask me. I pull on the dark wooden chair and sit down with a thump. During the day is when we remain indoors, we would turn into ash as soon as the rays touch our skin. I'd never seen it happen, so I've always been a bit curious. My eyes shift to the spot I always look at before working. The picture of my family always helps give me motivation to actually get things done. Expecting to see my parents' smiling faces, I am suprised at the empty space. The photo was gone! There was no way that was possible; that picture never moved from that spot. Please tell me I didn't break it yesterday!
I looked around the floor, but still couldn't manage to find the lost precious item. I checked inside my drawers, my bookcase, and nothing! I just had to lose my favorite and only picture! Ugh, how could it have happened? My body flops onto the bed and pillow, feeling a hard object underneath my pillow. I grow curious as I slowly lift the feather-filled, silk sleeping case. There it was! There was my beloved photograph! I hug it with all my might until I notice that there is an envelope underneath it.
Now, that was strange. I flip it over and see a signature that makes me tear up. It was my father's. He had written me a letter before his fatal decision. My hands shook in anticipation as I gently opened the envelope. The letter has his gentle yet sophisticated handwriting that is distinguishable anywhere. I feel a bit happy; my father had actually taken his time to write this for me. He had cared about me. Me, the disappointment and disgrace to the family. My mind was in confusion as I started to read the letter, though it was poem.
Alex, fear not.

and evil power will be cut down to size.Rely only on those who are,
not those trapped in society's jar.
