As I finished reading my father's letter, I couldn't help the look of relief that swept over my face. He wasn't dead after all! He was alive and well! He wasn't gone! The smile on my face grew with each happy thought regarding the knowledge of my father's existence. That smile turned into a confused expression. There was one question that had recently formed with no answer; "What in the world was he even talking about?"

He had mentioned a war and my "one fated pair". What? Isn't a fated pair just a fairytale, a myth, that is passed down about love? Honestly I'm glad my father is alive but I'm a bit worried about his mental health. Fated pairs don't exist. Everyone knows that. And a war? I'm a prince, shouldn't I have any prior knowledge about this? Just how many things do I not know? Man, this world is crazier than I thought. Maybe even my father is the crazy one.

I analyzed the letter again and reread the last line about knowing where to go. It took me a moment but it was clear I had to make my way towards our secret base! The best time to leave was probably tomorrow morning. No one would go out to look for me with the possibility of getting destroyed by the sun's rays. They'd probably think I was asleep too.

I packed a light suitcase with one change of clothes, shoes, undergarments, canned foods, and water. I made sure to put my worn out brown leather journal, a feather, and ink into the pocket of my coat. Oh, I almost forgot my picture. I put at the bottom of the suitcase and closed it again.

"This should be enough," I said, smiling to myself.

This seemed like it was going to be the adventure of a lifetime. Thank God for that because I was having the most plain and dull time of my life by being locked up in this castle. Now all that was left was finishing the torture that was still on my desk.

The sudden knock on my door caused me to move rapidly around my room. In just a matter of seconds, I put the suitcase and coat into my closet.

After clearing my voice, I said, "Come in."

To my surprise and curiosity, Doctor Samuel walked in. He looked at me with an eyebrow raised before making his way a little closer to me.

"Umm, can I help you Doctor?"

The older male vampire smiled and nodded in response. Was it just me, or was he awfully quiet? His look was the same one he had given me at the medical room; a strange leer. I finally decided to speak.

"What is it that you need?"

It seems like this man had to shake his head in order to get out of his imagination.

Coughing, he said, "Oh, yes. I almost forgot my dear prince. I came hear with a message from your mother."

"What was it?"

His upper lip curled a little before returning to subtle smile.

"She asks for you to come immediately to her chamber. She wishes to speak to you."

My mouth formed the shape of an "O" in surprise; she never called me to her room unless it was a vital issue. Maybe she found out about my father!

"Thank you for informing me about this matter, Doctor Samuel. I'll be sure to head there right this instant. Oh, and thank you for treating my wounds earlier today."

"It was not a problem, your majesty."

I quickly put on some slippers and headed off towards my mother's room, Samuel close behind. Upon arrival, the doctor announced our coming and my mother opened the door abruptly.

"Hurry, come on in you two. I must speak as soon as possible."

The two of us shuffled our way inside her bedroom and sat across from my mother, who was seated at my father's desk.

"What is it that you want to speak about, mother?"

"Oh, Alexander. It's about a war! Can you believe it? A war!"

My mother sounded drastic, and her arms waved around dramatically. This statement was to no surprise due to already being informed by my father's letter. Although I already knew about this, I played along and spoke with surprise in my voice.

"A war? But how? What? Why?"

She reached her hand across the table and tears were falling down her cheeks.

"Alex, my baby. Your father was murdered by the other kingdom."

Wait, what? I had seen my father leave just last night. His letter said he was alright! What happened and why? My shocked expression was seen by mother who squeezed my hand in attempt to comfort me.

"No one has seen him, and at our door there was a note that said I'd be next if you didn't marry their daughter next month."

"But mom, I can't just marr-"

"Yes, I know, Alex. You know how we've always wanted complete control of both kingdoms? That's what they want. They want you to marry their daughter so my people will agree to live under their reign. No one actually wants that and we, too, want the two domains to ourselves. That's why we are having this war; to see which kingdom gets to rule over both of them."

She inhaled deeply and continued, "My son will never be married to someone of their 'noble' blood. Those savage vampires even killed your father. Who do they think they are?"

"Mom, this doesn't make sense. My dad, he-"

"Yes, he's gone. Gone forever. So I have decided to put Samuel in charge as king for now."

The doctor smiled and waved from the seat next to mine.

"Don't worry, I'll do a good job."

Concern spread through my face. How would a doctor know how to run a kingdom? Was this even true about my father? Hadn't he known about this war before he left?

"Yes, we have faith in you Samuel," my mother said smiling lovingly.

Her normal green eyes were nowhere to be seen as a pair of dark purple eyes now took their place. Now that I think about it, they've been there since the moment she came into my room after the crazy incident.

The two of them grinned while looking at each other, my mom in a somewhat trance.

"Mom, are you sure about this?"

"Yes, why wouldn't I be? Sam is going to be the best king."
