I live in the same world as you do now, only a very different reality.

The time of which I occupy could probably be described in your favorite science fiction novel, only in my case you can’t shut the book. It happened delicately, each day it drifted further, and further, and further away until our moon was absent.

Things could only go downhill from there. Over a very long period of time our world changed into the horrifying scene we occupy today. Our tides were out of control along with our climate. A barren desert could become a flooded swamp in the matter of a few months. Our days changed rapidly from a few hours of night to months of darkness. Temperatures went haywire. It’s been so bad that earth has nearly frosted over eight times since that horrible happening.

With land quickly becoming uninhabitable the human race took to massive ships that tore apart the seas. With no technology to save them most animals died out, but others evolved in order to survive. We on the other hand took another step to protect ourselves from these threats, we developed kinesis.

Kinesis, the ability to control something with merely our minds. There was Pyrokinesis the ability to control fire, being able to take a mere spark and turn it into large flames. Then there was Hydrokinesis, the ability to control water. Whether it was freezing it or turning it to mist.

When you’re around ten your brain is developed enough to start performing kinesis, but first you need to take a series of tests to determine your level. You can not increase or decrease your level. If you are a level 120 or higher you are capable of performing Pyrokinesis, if you get anything lower you can only perform Hydrokinesis. The people able to perform Hydrokinesis are called Hydros and the people who are able to perform Pyrokinesis are called Pyros.

Over a period of time people began to divide, and turf wars erupted between the Hydros and the Pyros. It got so bad that it’s now considered weird to see a Hydro and a Pyro stick around each other. In some cases it’s genetic. If your mom and dad are both Hydros, you’re probably going to be a Hydro.

This entire turf war is what got us into this mess in the first place. My friend Cameron is the most powerful Hydro in our grade, if not the entire ship. He ranks at a level 117. He’s pretty popular among the Hydros, making him an immediate target for the Pyros.

I’m also considered a pretty big target because I’m a pretty rare case myself. I can do nothing. I’m neither Hydro nor Pyro. I’m fifteen and have never been able to perform any type of kinesis. After the second year of failure at age twelve, my parents gave me too a group home and moved onto another ship.

Taking into consideration Cameron’s power and my useless we’re a pretty big target to the average Pyro. And tonight we just so happened to run into a large group of Pyros and were quickly outnumbered.

I opened my eyes to a much different scene. The rain began to come down in blinding sheets of needles and large waves started to envelope the sides of the ships. I suddenly became aware of the barely audible sirens finding its way throughout the rain. To my right I could here low insults and curses being muttered, I turned my head to see two figures. Abandoning their abilities and attacking each other with their fists. Instantly, I knew it had to be Cameron and the group’s leader. Everyone else had fled at the sound of sirens.

“Cameron! Cameron!” someone yelled from deep within the rain. “Ugh! I’m going to kill you! Where are you?” once the voice came closer, I knew who it was. Claire. Oh, Claire. The name struck both fear and adoration into each guy the second he heard it.

She was very powerful, but in a different way than Cameron. She was a mere level 60, but what she lacked in strength, she made up for in smarts. Cameron and Claire are known as the two most powerful Hydros in the school. But even the Pyro boys couldn’t resist her beauty. Cameron and Claire are siblings, and not just any siblings, twins.

I’ve been friends with Cameron since kindergarten. He was the only friend who didn’t abandon me when I couldn’t perform kinesis. Unfortunately, Claire absolutely hates me. We used to get along as kids but since then, I don't know what's happened. She’s always throwing insults like ‘useless’ and ‘rat’ at me.

“Cameron! Mom wants you home NOW!” She yelled over the rain. The second her voice became audible over their insults and shouts they immediately stopped.

“Oh no. wh-” Cameron was cut off by a wave the size of a skyscraper that slammed us into the cold metal of the ship. By the time the freezing water retreated, taking a chunk of railing with it, we were all scattered across the floor, choking on all the water we had just inhaled. I was just close enough to Claire to hear her muttering something about killing Cameron when she got the chance.

We all got to our feet but the sea remained merciless. Yet a new wave loomed above us before delivering another blow. The ship took another lurch, causing me too loose my footing on the slick ground. I slid and just caught the edge of the deck before nearly joining the fallen railing. I tried to pull myself back up but it was too slick. Claire shrieked as she fell into the railing with another lurch of the boat. The railing snapped and she too was stuck dangling from the edge of the railing, connected to the ship by a measly hinge. But her hands were slipping.

The rain blinded me and stung my skin but I could just see the suspended railing, I extended my hand and swung down onto it just as she lost her grip. I grabbed her hand. Above I could slightly see movement, and in a few seconds something was happening below. I glanced down and saw three life boats appear from the ship’s side. It was a fifteen feet drop to the bottom. Not knowing if that was a survivable fall, I held on for dear life.

Mustering all the strength I could I attempted to pull Claire up. My arm ached from the beating I had gotten earlier but I managed to get her hands onto the railing I too was dangling from. Another wave threatened to pull us back down as I felt a wave crash into my legs. I shakily moved my right hand up against the heavy rain, searching for the next bar on the railing to grab onto. Another wave came up past my shoulders, nearly pulling me back down with it. My hand snapped back to the previous railing, where it would have to say. The railing shuddered and I could hear Claire shriek next to me as she hugged the railing even tighter. The next wave came up past our heads and engulfed us entirely. The water worked it’s way between my hand and the railing. Before I knew it, we were falling.

I plunged into the water, my leg hitting the boat’s metal edge on the way down. I frantically waved my hands through the water until my fingers found the boat. I swam to the surface and grabbed the edge. It wasn’t until I pulled myself into the boat that I realized Claire wasn’t there.

I scanned the unsettle surface of the water in a panic until I saw a blonde head break the water's surface. I didn’t think before I dived in head first. The strong current tossed my body about like a toothpick as I swam towards her. By some miracle, I reached her just as she was forced under by yet another wave. Grabbing her hand, we both swam back up to the surface, only to be forced back under by the wrath of another massive wave. Amidst the dark waters I could make out the bottom of the boat moving towards us. Suddenly a hand reached down and grabbed Claire, pulling her back up to the surface. Seconds later the hand returned. I reached out for it, kicking my feet to get closer. Our fingers barely touched each other before I was dragged back down into the darkness.

I fought against the current but it was no use. Another wave came and shoved me back under. The water engulfed me once again. I fought my way to the top not knowing which way was up or down without the moon to provide any light at this time of night. My chest tightened as I gasped for air and inhaled water instead.

My hand hit the air and I felt a second of relief in the panic of drowning. I kicked as hard as I could until my head resurfaced. I tried to inhale as much air as possible and cough up as much of the water at the same time before the next wave pushed me back down but I don’t know if the next wave came because something hit me and I once again found myself in an enclosing world of the dark sea.
