If there was one thing your town knew how to do, and do well, it was celebrating America. Every year on the 4 of July, your town would hold an annual 'street dance' to commemorate the event. Teenagers met up at the main road at around sunset and danced to a DJ until midnight. Normally, you wouldn't have gone, but your best friend had just texted you saying that she wanted someone to hang out with while she was there. Though it took quite a bit of convincing and bribing, you found yourself dragged out of your room and off of Tumblr, making your way to the center of town.
Once there, your best friend had nearly tackled you to the ground. Looking you up and down, she points out that you look nice. You had just thrown on an outfit that consisted jean shorts that reached just a little higher than your fingertips and a Corpse Bride tank top.
"Why did you want me to come?" You ask your best friend, (BF/N).
"Well, a bunch of kids from our grade are supposed to be here," She said looking around, then noticing you shifting around uncomfortably. Turning to look you in the eyes, she says, "Don't worry, (Y/N/N), you'll be fine."
After scoping out your surroundings, you found out that most your entire group of friends was there. You also noticed that a majority of the kids from your class was also there. Eventually, you found yourself in the midst of lines dancing the dance to the country classic, "Cotton Eyed-Joe". This wasn't the norm for you, but you were caught up in a sea of teenagers, sweat, and angst. And in all honesty, you were beginning to enjoy yourself.
Taking a break and also avoiding line dancing to 'Footloose', you sat down crisscross on the sidewalk with a bottle of ice cold water soothing your face and throat. You hear someone's footsteps near you, but don't bother looking up. They sit down, and you realize it's (BF/N).
"Hey (YN/N), guess what?" She asks, a smirk tugging at the edges of her lips.
"What?" You reply, slightly hesitant, awaiting her reply anxiously.
"(Your crushes sibling) is here, and he looks lonely," She says, eyeing the environment around the two of you. While you were looking around, you saw (Your crushes sibling), which only led to this question in your mind, would (C/N) be there? You saw no trace of him, after subtly looking for him in his usual group of friends. But still no sign of him, nonetheless. So you continued your evening, getting rowdy and dancing to Call Me Maybe by Carly Rae Jepson. You were having the absolute time of your life.
After a while, you found yourself getting tired, so you sat down at a bench with two of your friends, although you hadn't seen (BF/n) for a while. But that wasn't important to you, you were trying to focus your breathing so you didn't die of an asthma attack or something. Finally, you spotted her, talking to someone in a car, so you decided to go and talk to her. Weaving your way through sweaty teenagers and very drunk twenty-year olds, you stood next to her, in an attempt to convince her to come back and dance.
"Come on, buddy, we're missing all of the fun," You said, dragging on her arm, but she continued to talk to the people in the car. So you sat on the pavement like a three year-old. That's when you saw it. The car that belonged to (C/N)'s family, and you saw his parents driving.
It must be a coincidence, you thought, they must be picking up (crush's sibling name). So you attempted to not think about it, but failed miserably. Finally, after (BF/N) was done talking, you stood up and grabbed her by the arm, and ran back to the group dancing like a bunch of mad animals.
Suddenly, you and your best friends' song came on, and you both looked at each other simultaneously. You began jumping around, screaming the lyrics at the top of your lungs. People kept giving you two dirty looks, but you didn't care. Once the song was over, you went and found a bottle of water, and chugged it like there was no tomorrow. That's when you saw a girl from your grade jogged towards you with a large smile on her face.
"Uh oh, what happened?" You asked, frightened, as you weren't normally approached by people.
"(C/N) is here, haven't you seen him?" She said, slightly out of breath.
"Wait, what? I thought he didn't come to stuff like this." You said, utterly confused.
"Well, you like him, don't you?" She asked, and you bit your lip nervously.
"Um, I kinda do, I guess..." You said mumbling and stuttering over your words.
"Go and ask him to dance! He's not gonna be here all night, y'know? Take your chance, make your move." With that, she jogged back towards her friends, leaving me speechless. A million things were running through my mind at that moment, and I couldn't seem to focus. Soon I saw my best friend approach me, a large grin on her face.
"What did you do?" I ask, wondering what type of scheme she had come up with now.
"Just you wait," She said, and if that didn't make me even more suspicious, I don't know what would. So I sat, and I waited. The song blaring through the speakers ended, and I had found that all of my friends had abandoned me, the reason unknown.
This wasn't normally like them, I thought, at least one person would normally stay and hang out with me. I pulled out my phone, and started checking my Twitter feed, nothing interesting, to say the least. The next song started playing, and it sounded vaguely familiar. It was a fast-paced country song, called 'Honky Tonk Badonkadonk'.
Out of the corner of your eye, you saw footsteps stop next to you. You looked up, and you saw (C/N).
"Hey, um, do you wanna dance?" He asked, slightly nervous. You pulled your lips into a grin, this was the happiest you had been in a long time.
"I would love to." And with that, he held out his hand, which you gladly took. He led you into the center of the road, the makeshift dance-floor. Your hands both intertwined, and you were being thrown back and forth, twirled from here to there. You both locked eyes for a moment, and you simultaneously smiled. While you were spinning, you saw your friends all gathered to one side, all smiling and giggling, cheering you on.
At one point, a majority of his friends were stood next to the two of you, and one boy leaned in, and whispered something into his ear that made his eyes go wide, and a blush spread across his face. This made you curious as to what was said.
But at this moment, you didn't care. Your mind was clear, for the first time in what seemed like a long time. In this moment, your future didn't matter, your past didn't either, you were in the present, in the now. In that moment, you were infinite. And you didn't care, as long as he was with you, nothing mattered. And that was okay.
Soon, the song ended, but neither of you cared. You stood there for a moment, hands still in the others, when finally, one of you broke the somewhat awkward silence.
"I um, I have to go help my little brother." He says, in a small voice. You give him a small smile, which he returns. He dropped his hands from yours , and turned to find his sibling. You ran back to your little audience. A majority of your friends had embraced you, claiming that they were 'Happy you didn't pass out.'
Soon the word had spread about what had happened, and everybody kept coming up to you, happy for your supposed 'courage.' You couldn't get rid of the smile on your face, you were proud of what you had done.
That night, you couldn't keep the thoughts of him out of your mind. Little did you know, he couldn't get the thought of you out of his head.
