CHAPTER FIVE

"Tag, your it!" Sara shrieked, running wildly across the brown grass lined with morning dew. I chucked, maybe this would be okay. Soon Malory would be here, and we'd be a family again... almost.

A tear caught in my eye, I stumbled holding it in. They're in a better place now, watching over me everyday, I should be happy, appreciate what I have now, I have Malory. But that's not enough.

Sarah's small hands tugged on my jacket lining it with mud from the wet ground. A spark of annoyance pricked my skin, but then Sarah smiled at me, one of those full hearted, warm smiles. He face crinkled, her mouth forming a laugh. Confused, I glanced behind me at the bush, wiggling with a human movement. I gave Sarah a frown and opened my mouth.

The impact hit me from behind driving the air right out of my lungs. I hit the ground, mud splattering into my opened mouth. I lifted my head to spit if out, that's when I saw the culprit. He was smiling down at me with his good eye.

Jake.

"SHIT, Jake!? These are my good jeans! UGH" I grumbled brushing it off me unsuccessfully.

He shrugged, a big smirk forming on his face.

I rolled my eyes and marched up to wooden steps and inside to take a shower.

I put on yoga pants and a T-shirt, then threw my wet hair in a messy bun.

I sat down on my small bed as a tall figure approached the door way. I grumbled as Jake walked in. His blue eyes found mine, then flashed to the floor, wandering. I looked up at his purple swelling eye, gosh it looked pretty bad.

"Uh, so are you really mad at me? Because it was just a joke" Jake uttered.

I chewed on my lip, I guess not.

"No" I said. "I just- I don't know."

"Well, I'm really sorry, I didn't want to make you mad" He admitted.

I shrugged my shoulders, I mean it's over now.

Jake came to my bed and sat down, his face coming in focus. And man his eye was bad, he needed it checked out. Purple tissue surrounded his left eye all the way to the bridge of his nose. Yet somehow his eyes still had a lively glint to them.

"Jake, you need to have someone look at your eye... I mean if you want to. But I think you should, it looks pretty bad." I told him.

He nodded, his mouth forming a slight frown. His hand traveled to his face examining the bump, as his hand made contact with the bruise he flinched.

I sighed. Would it be like this forever? Me feeling alone being harassed by strangers, waiting on Malory to arrive, and Jake getting hit by our foster parents, being a little less than himself. I won't be able to take it. I laid my head on the wooden head board, a hollow thud echoing across the small room.

A long forbidding silence stretched across the room and out the hall, the sounds of whatever was going on down stairs reaching me.

Two more years. Two more years, then I can move out with Malory, we'll be fine. All of this behind us, just like a bad dream. I'll have it all again, well almost... but it's the closest I'll get. And I don't know maybe Jake.... but no, ugh this is all so confusing.

My thoughts were interrupted by the old door bell.

Jake stood up and furrowed his eyebrows, his eyes meeting mine for a second before flickering down. He made his way down the stairs and to the door, with me following behind.

As he tugged the old heavy door open, a cheery face and familiar long black hair greeted us.

"TRISH!?" I yelled running to her. She pulled me into a grizzly bear hug.

"Jake, this is the nurse that err.. helped me." I say. He nodded and pressed his lips together. I looked at him, he had a very mysterious look to himself with his brownish black hair, tall lean figure, and striking blue eyes. He looks like the kind that would be causing lots of trouble in school. My heart sank, I guess I'll find out when I start the new school with him on Monday.

I shook my head, and turned back to Trish.

"Trish, oh my gosh we really need you to look at Jakes eye!" I gestured to him.

Trish smiled.

"I can do that, but I came here for something else..." She trailed off.

My mouth formed a frown

"What is it?" I mean it couldn't be any worse than the last news I'd received. Could it?

"Okay so um well Malory's okay for now... but we found lacerations on her brain. Her condition is getting worse and I-I think you need to go see her...now before anything serious happens" She announced.
