Harry leans in closer, his warm hands wrapped around mine. His lips are mesmerising as he whispers, "Why are you doing this?"
I swallow, look away. "I..."
"Get off the road! Fucking faggots!" A car swerves past us, beeping wildly, the driver red faced.
I flick him the finger, but Harry covers my hand with his. "Don't." He mutters.
"Why the fuck not?" I mutter, pulling my hand away.
"Please. Just don't. Yes, he's an idiot but you don't need to retaliate." He takes it back gently.
"He can't just go around insulting people and saying shi-"
"Calling someone gay isn't an insult, Louis." Harry seems offended.
You think I don't know that? I want to shout. Instead I say, "But you can't just let bastards like that say stuff about you, not when they don't know you. And besides, you're not..." I want to say, you're not gay, but then he might realise that I am, and decide to not have anything to do with me.
He shakes his head. "If I cared what he thought then I would be stupid."
I pull away. "Whatever."
"Hey..." He sighs, shaking his head. "Look, I'm sorry. Can I give you a ride home?"
"Um..." I chew my lip, my hair blocking my eyes. I can't go back home, not after the note I left this morning.
"You don't have anywhere to go?" He asks softly, and my heart skips as he looks down steadily at me.
"No... but if you just drop me off at like, a bar or something..." I shrug.
He swallows. "I can't do that."
"What? Why?" I frown.
"Look, do you just want to... maybe stay? With me? At my house?"
"Harry..." Why is he doing this? We literally met an hour ago. He owes me nothing, I am nothing to him. He doesn't know me, doesn't know anything about me. Why is he being so... kind?
"Look, please. Just tonight, until you find some place to stay." His eyes are pleading.
"Just tonight, then." I sigh.
He grins. "Really?!"
I nod shyly. Its nice to feel wanted for once. "Really."
