Olivia breathed a sigh of relief as she watched Ethan drift off to sleep. She was damn lucky to have found this place, and in such a small precious amount out of time to. Someone had obviously use this as a sort of survival shelter before, most probably not from creepers.
In fact, the area was pretty remote itself. Dry area, dead trees. It was like a horror movie. What if the owner of this little hut came back? Demanding them to get out of his home? They ought to make peace, right? After all, there weren't a lot of them left.
Earlier, she had a rummaged through some old drawers and found some clothes. It was pretty much clouded in dust, but any jeans and a long top would have to do for now. A small hand tired at the end of Olivia's shirt, making her jump. "Ava" she placed a hand on her accelerating heart. "Don't scare me like that." She warned. Ava looked up at her, slightly amused. "Sorry, is he going to be okay?" She asked, looking Ethan over.
"With time, yes. Aren't you supposed to be asleep little one?" She asked, patting Ava's head gently. Ava giggled and waved a hand in the air. "Sleep is overrated." Ava licked her lips. "Besides, someone needs to keep an eye on Ethan while he sleeps. When he wakes up he'll be okay, and he can fight the invisible monsters again." She said, punching the air. Realization flooded Olivia. Ava couldn't see them. She could see the dents in the car, and blood from ripped out intestines, but she couldn't see them. The killers. Olivia tensed. Ava would never live a normal life.
Ava tugged on Olivia's sleeve, snapping her out of her dreamlike state. "You okay?" She asked, pouting her pink lips and looking at her with those wide blue eyes. Olivia forced a smile. "I'm fine sweetheart." She replied, standing up. "Would you like a glass of water?" She offered the little girl. Ava looked puzzled. "Water? Where?"
"The tap" Olivia giggled. "I was as surprised as you are when I first found out."
Ava nodded. Can I go see Ethan?" She asked, too politely to be refused."Alright" Olivia heaved a sigh, feeling a little lightheaded. It was almost nightfall and she had no idea wether this house was completely, one hundred percent safe. Sure, she'd checked every cupboard, nook and cranny. There was even a key to lock the door just laying there atop the table. But the more she though about it, it didn't sound like safety at all. It sounded like a trap.
Give it a rest, Olivia. Her brain whispered to her pounding heart. You'll be fine.
Would she? And even if she were, would they be okay? She walked back to the room Ethan was in and spied Ava quietly curled up against Ethan's good side. Her heart slowly melted.
She folded her arms and leaned against the wall, watching them sleep. The gentle rise and fall of their chests. Something tugged at her heart. Ethan couldn't remember her. She had no idea why it hurt so much to know that.
Because you love him. Her brain whispered, making her eyes widen and the hairs on the back of her neck
