The next day was like any other; Dad was drunkenly passed out on the living room sofa, Mom was still missing, and my older brother was ignoring us as usual. He was most likely off somewhere with his annoying, crude, friends getting high. Life was never "normal" for my unconventional, out-of-the-box family. I never remember ever having the feeling of "fitting in" or aspiring to blend in. I've always stuck out like that one super bright street light in a line of mediocre dim lights. Even though it would seem as though I never let anything pass me, or bug me- honestly, it all does. It all started at the age of eight when my mom "mysteriously" disappeared in the middle of the night the day after my brother's birthday. It's a known fact in our town that my dad has seemingly always been a drunk- resulting in a hard run of things for my mother. She could never get a job, thanks to the fear of my drunken father stumbling in and starting a fight with the shop owner. On top of that, she was always fearfully nervous of leaving my brother and I home alone with him. Though, he's never done anything, I'm still scared every night that he'll creep in and lash out over some irrelevant detail. Lucky for me, the fire escape outside my window, is a great escape. I can't even count the number of times I've climbed out and tried to forget about the world for just one moment of peace.
