Chapter 1 – The Game.

Friday 24th July.

Our first encounter was at a basket ball game. Wait, first of all you should know that I skipped mum’s ‘girly night’ to go to this basket ball game, for my best friend Lily. Her boyfriend –my other best friend – Dean, was playing in the game, and she needed someone to go with. Naturally, I was the victim, who got dragged into going with her, despite my persistant moaning and groaning.

Anyway, that was the first time I saw him. It seemed like just another Friday night, 'insignificant but for its essential Fridayness , not to mention its Julyness'. He was perched two rows ahead of us, in the blue plastic they call seats. To his immediate right was a blonde headed girl. I was reading ‘Paper Towns’ by John Green. Yes, I brought I book to a basketball game. I’m not really one for sports, never have been, never will be. On the other hand, books will always hold a special place in my heart, therefore it seemed like a perfect thing to do at the time.

I was silently reading, the poet that is John Green scooping me up into a new world. A world where I would much rather be in, rather than the sweaty, crowded stadium I was currently situated in. When the girl got up. She manoeuvred sideways through the crowd, pink Burkin bag over her shoulder, heading towards the bathroom, maybe. His eyes followed her and then landed on me. His electric blue eyes seemed to pierce into me, and send an electrical jolt between us.

Sometimes I wonder why he looked at me, and if he didn’t see me, what difference that would have made. If we both just let the moment pass (as a normal moment), and let the girl return to his side. Maybe then, our lives would still be 'normal'.

I never have understood those girls, who take stuff like a little electric jolt as a sign and go ask the guy out. I’m not like that. I’m the silent, unnoticeable type, so I tried to shake the feeling off, and told Lilly I had to make I phone call, so that she would let me go. I knew it was silly, and kind of childish to just run away, however, there was just something about staying there, in the sight of the boy, that unnerved me. She nodded (in reply), and went back to playing with her brown curls of hair, while she drooled over Dean – who was currently celebrating for the ‘awesome’ shot he’d just made.

I spent the rest of the game in the bathroom, checking on the scores, and then pacing up and down the cold, empty car park. All the time, trying to forget about the mysterious boy, with the piercing, but gorgeous eyes.

Eventually, the game was over. The score was 8:5 to Dean’s team. Everyone came out all at once, our team screaming in celebration, as the other team glared in envy.

I spotted Dean with his arm around Lilly, in the midst of the rest of the team. I wasn’t really one to go in front of everyone and pull Lilly and Dean away, so I sat on the edge of the car bonnet and waited till they reached me, and we all jumped into Dean’s black ’67 Chevy Impala. (Like me, he loved old cars. Classics. Also like me, he was a major Supernatural fan.)

“So girls,” Dean started to say, as he reversed out of the car park.

I looked around for the boy but I couldn’t see him anywhere.

“Oh no, I don’t like where this is going!” Lilly teased.

“No, I was just wondering if you two wanted to celebrate with me. Tomorrow of course, it’s too late now.”

    “Sure.” I agreed.

“Ariel did you even see the shot? Where were you?” Lilly questioned.

“Ummm, I just had to take a call. Anyway, I did see it I was just watching from the top. Drop me home please, Dean, I’m not exactly feeling my best!”

“Sure but you better not miss tomorrow, I’m taking you two to ‘Le Gâteau Jaffa’, my treat!”

“Oh, trust me, I won’t miss that.”
