Couldn't If You Tried- Reader x Eren Jaeger

You jolted awake before your eyes opened. You could feel the sunlight edging it's way through your eyelids; the red darkness and the relaxing heat. But the relaxation was soon pulled away and replaced by uncomfort. Your neck and back hurt like hell, not to mention you could feel things on your body that weren't supposed to be there. Cautious, you sat up a little straighter. A rush of cool air soothed your pain for a split second.

"Oh, you're awake. Hey guys, she's awake!"

Armin's voice. Many other voices joined footsteps making their way down the hallway.

"Armin?" You spoke. A weird pain shot through your lip and you could feel the tug and pull of separated flesh. Great.

"Armin why am I in the infirmary?"

He sat down on your bedside and handed you some applesauce, "Because on our last expedition, you cut your shoulder, gained a concussion, and split your lip really bad."

It's true, now that he mentioned it you could vaguely remember falling out of a tree. And remembering, thinking, made your head hurt.

"Armin, you know I hate apple sauce, why did you give me this?"

"I figured it'd be easy on your lip."

"Ice cream would have been easier."

You took a small sip of the golden mush and felt like a child again.

"Y/n, you're awake!" Sasha flung herself at you and pulled you into a rib crushing hug. At least, it felt like it. You gritted your teeth and let out a small groan as you pushed her away. She smiled as everyone else walked in. Eren, Mikasa, Connie, Jean, Ymir and Christa joined the party.

"Hey, you know who had to carry you all the way to the carts? Me. I don't know what you have tucked away in that small little body of yours but it's damn heavy," joked Jean.

"Fuck off Kirchstien I'll shove my blade up your ass," you spat.

"He- Hey you should calm down, it's probably not good for you to be your usual sassy self right now."

Eren. He was there when you fell off that damn tree. He probably blames himself for it, technically he gave you the concussion, catching you by your foot and having you swing into the tree head first. Falling would have probably been better. But you're not the type to hold a grudge.

"Where is she? There? Nope. There? Aha! There she is!"

Hanji slid into the room immediately making you smile while everyone else took a step back. In her arms was a pile of books. She was your favorite, and you were hers. Both of you shared great interests in science, often times you found yourself in deep conversations with her.

"Y/n! So good to see you awake! Guess what, we caught two more test subjects! You need to help me decide names!"

"Maybe later Hanji.. I'm still pretty weak."

"Oh. You're right! Here, I've brought you these," she slammed the books on the bedside table. "Something for when you're bored," she said with a wink. "Soldiers! I have a very important task for you!"

Everyone exchanged quizzical glances.

"My office is an utter disaster, I need you all to organize it. The expedition has left us with heaps of paperwork, I'll never get it done unless you get my office fixed up."

Lazy sighs rose from people's mouths as they followed Hanji to their despair, but Eren stayed behind.

"Look I'm sorry for what I did, it was just instinct you know? See someone falling, catch them kinda thing," redness began to stain his cheeks.

"It's fine, you can make it up to me by organizing Hanji's office to perfection, I have a feeling I'll be spending most of my time there once I'm out of bed."

He chuckled nervously. You weren't really best friends with Jaeger like you were with the rest of them, his apology was sincere.

"Bring it in," you opened your arms wide despite the pain and gave him a hug. His heart was beating rapidly." {Probably just nervousness, you thought.} As he was walking away you picked up slme books from the table. Anatomy, Astronomy, or medicine. You decided to read about medicine, and drifted to sleep in the process.
