the pretty girl

It was only two days after Nathaniel Kurtzberg went missing did Chloe Bourgeois discover his sketchbook tucked away in the corner of the classroom.
On one page there was a picture of your typical Paris day, the Eiffel tower was crowded, the sidewalk was bustling with life and people and the school gates were open as a girl in a baggy sweater made her way up the steps (Chloe didn't understand why she'd wear such a hideous thing in such nice weather).

Inside of the school, a boy had fallen over and his friends were surrounding him, smiles plastered on as they clearly tried to make him lighten up. A little way over, a girl is hiding herself behind a book, using it to deflect the glances made by a huddle of students whispering to each other; in an empty class, a boy - different to the one from before - is collecting up his books which are all on the floor, splayed out unevenly as though he was pushed while holding them.

On the opposing page there was Paris under the cover of night. A girl is holding a shiny object to her arm, and curled up on the street was a boy, watching his friends walk away carelessly. Another boy has tears running in rivers down his face as a bright computer screen glares hateful comments at him.

Finally, the most eye-catching and enchanting of all to Chloe is a girl, hanging by a necklace of rope from the Eiffel Tower.

She looked so pretty up there, Chloe wondered why she was there at all.
