CHAPTER TWO

Mr. Phillips watched me carefully as I placed his coffee on his desk and waited for him to taste it and tell me exactly what I fucked up this time. To my surprise, he put his office phone down and took a sip of his coffee, grinning at me happily. I could see the scheme in his head before he opened his mouth to speak. “It’s excellent as always, Ember.” He said in a pleasant tone. I was totally floored. This was the same man that sent me running all over town for more sugar because I did not make his coffee sweet enough. There was no way that he would praise a cup of coffee that I knew tasted bad, since I had purposely poured salt into it just moments before.

He placed the white cup down and cleared his throat, his tongue flicking out to lick his lips as he surely fought to get the saltiness out of his mouth. “Ember, have a seat.” I watched him warily as I slowly sat on the edge of the plush, royal blue chair that was placed directly in front of his desk. What was he playing at? This had to be bad news if he wasn’t going to scold me up one wall and down the other. I was beginning to worry before he finally continued with what he was about to say. “There is a party tonight at the Plaza. A major client who is looking for an attorney for his latest lawsuit will be there. I would like you to accompany as my date.”

My eyes narrowed in disbelief and I shook my head. “No. I will not accompany you to some party that I have no business at. I am only a temp, and will not be working here much longer. You should ask one of the other lawyers that work here at the firm. They would benefit from mingling more than I would.” I smiled tightly at him, unsure how to feel about his proposal. There was no way that I would go on a date with my boss, who was most definitely on the list for all women to steer clear of.

He shook his head and waved his hand at me, as if dismissing the thought. “I need you to pretend to be my girlfriend in front of Mr. McKnight. He is quite the ladies’ man and I want to show him that I am no old geezer, either. When he came into my office last week he hinted at my inability to get a beautiful woman of my own, and I am not one to back down from a challenge.” A harsh line had formed in between his eyebrows, confirming my assumption that he was plotting inside of that balding head of his.

“Mr. Phillips, I will not pretend to be your girlfriend. It is not right to lie to your clients, much less the largest client you have this year. If you were to lose him, you would lose some of your pay, correct? I am sure your money means more to you than a challenge that you cannot win.” I said, crossing my arms over my rather ample chest. This man was a bother, utterly and truly.

He smiled at me. “You forget that is what we do. We lie to our clients. Lawyers are hardly known for being truthful. Oh, and call me Landon. We are dating after all, yes?”

“I can’t call you Landon. You are my boss. That would be like me calling my teachers by their first names back in high school. I’m sorry, but I still have to refuse.” I said, grimacing at the thought of calling him anything else but Mr. Phillips.

He glared at me. “I am not that much older than you, you know.” The heat of his gaze made my skin crawl and I tore my eyes away from him, studying the peeling paint of the ceiling.

“Sir, you were twenty one when I was born. You are old enough to be my father and I can’t just see passed that. It doesn’t matter if the relationship was fake. Besides, I am seeing someone.”  I stated, rolling my eyes. I was hoping that he wouldn’t catch on to that little lie. Caine and I weren’t seeing each other, but he had given me his contact information. There was hope, right?
