"Alyah you've been sitting in your room all week. What're you doing? When I was my age I'd do anything and everything to get out the house." Mom asked me. "I'm reading. Why do I always have to repe-" just then there was a knock on the door. "Coming!" Mom yelled as she ran down the stairs to open the door. "Hello." Mom says. "Hi! We're the Rankliff's and we just moved next door. We just came to say hello and maybe get to know our new neighbors" says a tall pale main with salt an pepper colors hair. "Oh, how silly of him. This is Ronald and I'm Teresa." I'm guessing that was his wife. She was kind of pretty. But then again kind of plain. She had brown hair and brown eyes. And you could tell she was a little old because of the aging under her eyes. Just when I was about to say hello I noticed somebody else standing behind the two. "Who is that?" I say. " oh this, this is Michael. He's our son. Michael why don you say hello?" Says Teresa. "Well I would if I wasn't being block-" jus when he stood in front of me he stopped mid sentence. I didn't understand why. But he was looking at me kind of funny. "Hi." I say. "Well, hello there." Michael is.. Ok he's hot. Let's face it. He's tall. Wavy dark brown hair. Blue green eyes and perfectly sun kissed skin. But I wasn't gonna fall for him. If that's what he though he was sadly mistaken. I'll stick to my book fantasies thank you. "Come in, come in." My mom says as she walks to the kichen. "You're just in time we're having our favorite dinner. Made from scratch lasagna with cheesy bread." Mom says as she starts putting food on plates. "Oh no we couldn't-" "I insist! There's plenty. It'll just sit in the fridge for a few days anyway." We all sit down to eat and mom starts a conversation. Oh god- "So, where are you guys coming from?" Mom asks. "Oh we're here from Arkansas. My husband here got a lovely job here in wonderful Texas" says Teresa. I don't know what I was worried about. Teresa seems just as talkative and embarrassing as my mom. And by the look on Michael's face you could tell. "I'm gonna go get some more if that's fine with you. It's delicious" Michael says to my mom. "Of course help yourself" my mom says with a smile. "We've been here for about ten years. We come from just a town over." My mom says. "Oh how wonderful. So you know your way around? How about you darling? Oh you're so pretty! You seem lovely too. But shy. It's ok we don't bite." Teresa says to me. "Oh don't mind her she's very quiet all the time." "She's beautiful. I bet her boyfriend is very happy to have her." "Oh she doesn't have a boyfriend not after what happ-" "Mom!" I yell as I stand up. I see everybody looking at me and I can feel my face turning red and the tears coming so I quickly run upstairs into my room. "Oh Alyah.." I hear as I make it to my room and slam the door. This is why I don't live outside of books. This right here. What happens in books can be forgotten and they're not real but what just happened.. It was embarrassing! How could my mom do that to me?! And to people we just met?! "Ugh!" I say as I plop on my bed and look out the window. "Perfect time for reading a book" I start to open my book when there's a knock on my door. "Alyah? Are you in there? Did I say your name right? Oh gosh I'm terrible at this." A voice says behind the door. "Who's there? And yes, it's Alyah." "Can you open the door, please?" I get up and slowly open the door jus a crack to see Michael standing there. "You wanna talk about it?" He asks in a calm and peaceful tone. I look at him for a while. I almost study him. He's even more beautiful up close. You can see the sparkle in his eyes and how perfect his teeth are an- "Alyah?" That's when I realize I've been staring at him the whole time. "Oh um- sure come in." I open the door and he walks over to my dresser and looks at the picture of me and Johnathon. "Is this him?" He asks. "Him?" I ask back. "Yes the guy you're so upset over." "Oh. Yeah I mean I guess." He sits down on my bed and pats next to him. "Come sit let's talk" for the next thirty minutes we talk. I tell him what happened and I can tell that he cares. I don't know why because we just met. "I completely understand where you're coming from. Well from a different way. I lost my sister in a car accident. What makes it worse I was driving." He says with a sad look on his face. "Ever since then my parents and I have tried to find a way out of Arkansas because no matter where we'd go I'd always see Emily everywhere. Emily was my sister's name by the way." He says. "Oh my God I am so sorry.. How old? If I may ask?" "Ten. She was ten." I gasp and cover my mouth. I think he knows I'm about to cry because he quickly wraps his arms around me. He's strong.. Muscular arms. You'd think they'd crush you but they're actually so comfortable. I can hear his heartbeat. The steady rhythm almost makes me fall asleep. "Hey look I know this is bad timing." He says as he lets go.. I don't want him to but I don't want to be weird so I let him. "I think we have a lot in common. And I just got here and have nobody to talk to. Maybe we can hangout some time? You know My house. Or-or yours." As he says that I can see he's blushing. Is he really blushing? Over me? Does this mean- he likes me? Me? Ugly old raggedy doll me? "Sure. Sounds nice." I say with a smile. "Great how about tomorrow? We're still setting up the house some but the basement is nice. We have a tv. How about a movie?" Is this a date? Me and him. Him and me?! Watching- movies? I blush and look down. "Yeah sounds really nice. I'll be there." "Michael! It's time to go home!" Teresa yells up the stairs. "Coming! Well it was nice meeting you beauti- Alyah." He says as he takes my hand and kisses it. Oh no. Am I falling for him?
