Chapter One
It's finally the first day of the pool season, and Luke is more than excited. It's his thing, the water is. He was always there, and if it was too stormy outside he had other options. Since he's always been an aquatic guy any of the hotels in the area with inside pools would let him use them.
It was weird though, he never joined the school swim team, it just wasn't his cup of tea. Sweet ice tea, the only kind he likes to drink.
I mean, Luke is a southerner so it wasn't a surprise when he told all of his friends he only like sweet tea, the only weird part was when he did tell them, it wasn't like there was any other option to be his favorite drink, even an ice cold coke couldn't beat it, but it was close.
"Luke, the pool opens in like ten minutes, get ready." his boss, Antonio, calls.
Luke knew, and it was eating him alive. Why couldn't the ten minutes come any faster? Why couldn't the pool just open ten minutes sooner?
Ofcourse if the pool did open ten minutes earlier, Luke would also have to leave ten minutes earlier.
Luke got the pool for four hours, and four hours only. It was a stupid rule about how if it was longer you could get tired and it would affect other people's health. But Luke didn't get tired. He was fifteen and had a heart of a lion.
Yes, he was a little too young to be working as a lifeguard, but he was good at what he did.
He looks up and the girls opening the gate sigh. Two minutes and it would happen. Two minutes and his world would be rushing. He would be in paradise.
Luke really hopes there's a pool in heaven because then he could have a job swimming or fishing. That would truly be heaven to Luke.
"Countdown with us to the opening of the gates!" the girls say, with fake smiles, tryi g to get the kids excited.
"Three!"
"Two!"
"One and a half!" some of the kids giggle, while others are upset with the cheesy joke.
"One and three quarters,"
"It's getting really old now." Luke mumbles, just let the kids in.
"One!"
The gates open and kids drop their stuff, not even putting it in a pool chair. They just jump in, some of the kids were smart and put a life proof phone case so it wouldn't cause harm to their phone. Luke was one of those.
"I'm drowning! Help me!" a girl, a cute girl to Luke, screams.
Luke smirks, she's cute trying to get his attention. I'll just let her squirm a bit, she can't be serious. But soon, her head is under the water and barely coming up.
Whispers come up if Luke is gonna help her.
"You're cute!" Luke laughs looking at her.
Soon, she doesn't say anything and she's more freaked out than ever. Maybe she is drowning, maybe she wasn't just joking.
Luke jumps into the pool, swimming quickly to her, what has he done? He let her struggle, that's what he did.
He goes down to the six foot mark and retrieves her little plump, but not fat body. She's thick, and that's what Luke likes, not the little skinny girls who look like they starve themselves, that's gross to him.
"Is she okay, my sister?" a little boy in swim shorts and camouflage cowboy boots comes up to Luke.
"Please says she's okay, she's the onliest one I got." he says frowning so you could see his two front, missing, teeth.
"Yea, she'll be okay bud. I just gotta give her mouth to mouth. So she'll wake up." Luke says trying to look happy.
The boy nods.
After two hard minutes, the girls eyes open. Her emerald eyes mixed in with hazel and some gold specks look Luke in the eyes.
"What're you doing in my bedroom, my daddy'll be furious." she says, her accent is surely southern.
"We're at the pool." Luke says low, so only they can hear.
"Dangit. My dad knows everybody in this town, so somebody'll tell him." she frowns.
"Then, somebody'll tell him you drowned."
"Drowned." she croaks.
"Drowned." he confirms.
