It wasn't midnight but I was tired enough to be. I only had a few minutes to get home, the time doubling as the night stretched on. My car swerved on the road, the threat of ending up in the ditch ever present in my mind. The snow fell, melting as it hit the concrete in front of me as quickly as it came down. "Come home before it gets nasty" comes to my mind and I started the radio before extinguishing it just as quickly. The snow blurred the surroundings as I sped home, the tunnel vision becoming real. The snow swung full force into my windshield, not angling for anything but my head. I blinked, the snow becoming so heavy that all I could see was the blur of a dark road and surrounding trees that would become less blurred if I ran into them. The snow flurries made my eyes hurt, the constant movement tricking me and causing me to slow down before I crashed. It reminded me of a video game time warp when the graphics become a little too blurred and they throw the fake static into the camera shot to trick you into thinking you are going faster than you are. I watched the edge of the road where the railing was and despite my speedometer, it wouldn't come fast enough. I wasn't moving as I thought I was. I blinked my tired eyes and tried to focus once more. When I stopped the car finally as home and stared at the falling snow in my headlights, I could see clearly. Funny how when I'm moving too fast how blind I was, and once stopping to look around, how clearly I could see.
