Chapter 2

Skyler

I draw in a sharp breath as I walk into the school building.

Building isn't even the correct term; it's a castle.

And my home for the entire year.

I follow the signs to what seems to be the dining hall and find about ten thousand students and teachers milling around.

immediately, I feel paranoid. Busy areas like these are where danger lurks.

I do a 360 spin to check the security of my surroundings, then walk backwards to see if I missed the main office. They should give out maps for places like these; it's hard to imagine anyone not getting lost in a place so huge. Although, I don't think it'd be too hard to navigate through this school for me. Once I can memorize every nook, cranny, and route, that is.

During my stupid stroll backwards, I accidentally run into a brick wall. Turning around with reflexes that I've mastered throughout the years, I realize that I've actually bumped into a tall guy.

"Is that how you always walk?" He says, raising an eyebrow.

"Whaa..." Is my brilliant answer as I look at his hair. Holy shit. This guy has silky, dark chestnut hair. Hair that is practically asking me to run my fingers through it.

I don't know why, but the first thing I always notice about guys are their hair. This guy is no exception- his hair could totally be in a shampoo ad.

"Ok..." He gives me an uneasy smile when I fail to answer.

I'm a teenage girl, okay? I like looking at hot guys .

Oh, yeah, I am definitely drooling.

The boy's face suddenly twists into a cocky, knowing grin. "Ah, yes. I should've remembered that this is the typical reaction I get from the ladies." He shakes his head as if in pure misery. "It's just so hard being pretty, you know?" He gives me a sympathetic pat on the shoulder before swaggering away.

"I wasn't drooling!" I blurt out after him. Oh my gosh, now I've just embarrased myself even more, especially with most of the kids nearby giving me funny looks.

"I didn't say you were," the strange boy tosses back without looking over.

When he's gone, I turn around to see a blonde girl looking at me.

"What?" I snap without meaning to.

She looks stunned and starts to turn away, colour rising up to her cheeks. I mentally curse myself as I walk over to her. I shouldn't be angry at her because of someone else.

"Hey, I'm sorry I didn't mean to... I mean it's just that..."

Abruptly, she starts to laugh. "It's okay. I get it. You just embarrassed yourself in front of a really hot guy-"

"Oh, and who are you to judge?" I interrupt her.

"Max Deuville."

"Huh?"

"My name is Max Deuville. What's yours?"

"Skyler Cross," I blurt out before I can stop myself. I've had so many fake names and ID's before, it's kind of second nature for me to announce my actual name hesitantly.

Crap. First day and I act like a dork already. How the hell am I supposed to survive a year here?

"Cool. You want to go the grand dining hall with me to pick up our schedules?"
