Chapter Five

"Jamie, Are you alright? You looked kinda shaken up when we left." My mom said as we were driving home, turning into our driveway.

"Nah. I'm fine." I say, biting my tongue.

When my mom turned the key, shutting the engine off, I opened the door, swinging my legs out.

I remember when I was about 10, and we drove by the animal shelter. I begged them to go in. When they finally agreed, I remember seeing hundreds of animals, from rabbits to hermit crabs. But the one that really got my attention, was this cute little tabby kitten. She wasn't cubby at the time but she was still an idiot. I wanted this kitten more than anything. I remember a few days later, I came home from school to see the kitten on my kitchen table and I named her Phoebe. Dad bought her even though mom said no. But the thing that made me remember this was that the dad I had 7 years ago was caring. The one I saw through the glass window and talked to through the black phone was a monster.

I felt the wind rush through my hair as I swung out of the car and walked through the front door. I walked up the stairs and sat at the foot of my bed.

I'm going to die, I thought to myself. The thought of dying, right now, right here, gave my shivers down my spine. In a matter of days I will be dead, by my fathers hand.

"Jamie, calm down. You'll be fine. Everything is going to be....okay"I mumbled, trying to relax.

I crawled into bed, where I immediately dragged the blankets on top of my shivering body. I turned my lamp off and tucked my arms under neath the warmth of the blankets. My eyes stared at the cold ceiling. The only thought on my mind was the last words I heard him say. And soon fell into a soft sleep.

----

I opened my eyes to a blinding white light.

It was mother. She flicked on the lights, waking me up. She told me I was late again.

I threw on some clothes and raced down stairs.

"Jamie. I'll drive you to school before I go to work."she told me as I stuffed a piece of toast into my mouth as fast as I could.

"Why? You hate driving me to school." I replied.

My mom shrugged." Well. You looked pretty shaken up last night. So I thought it would be nice to drive you. But you know, it's completely normal for teenagers your age to act like this."

Great. Now my mom thinks I'm going crazy.

I grabbed my backpack and quietly took a seat in my mom's mini van.

"Jamie." She said as I stepped out of the car, in front of the school. "Be Careful."

I looked back at her. Careful. That was exactly what dad told me. They both told me to be careful.

But be careful from what?
