Rain on a Sunny Day: Prologue
You see that girl, leaning on her locker, iPod in hand and earphones plugged in? The one that shuts herself off from the world because the only name she gets called is ‘freak‘? The one who no one understands, has only a few friends, is constantly picked on and has a weird, quirky personality?
Well, that‘s me. Yes, here in the flesh, Rain Parker. Or as my few friends like to call me, Rainie. Tall, red hair, pale, freckled face, piercing grey eyes. A junior that nobody cares about. Well, with the exception of my family.
You see, it wasn‘t always like this. I used to be popular, have a lot of friends. I was the one everybody looked up to, not only because of my social status, but because I was the only popular one in school who was nice to everyone. Jocks, cheerleaders, loners, nerds, emos, stoners. And I got the same in return. I had good grades, nice clothes and was always surrounded by friends who actually cared about me. My world was perfect. Until that one day in the 8th grade, when it became clear to me that I have a ‘gift‘.
I can see ghosts.
As if this wasn‘t enough, I also discovered that I can not only see them, but hear them, touch them and speak to them. To me, they were like any other person, except they had a sort of glow around them. That‘s not the reason why I‘m such an outcast, though. The only people who knew about my ability were my three close friends – Arora, Sam and Clover Jay – and my mother‘s friend Dannie.
During those years between 8th grade and 11th grade, I learned how to communicate with
them. And it turns out, Dannie had the same ability as I. She was my teacher – well, is my teacher. But even Dannie couldn‘t tell me why I would only see female ghosts. Only females for three years.
So it was even more confusing when, one day in the beginning of my junior year, walking home from school, I was shocked to find a boy – no, wait, a guy – standing around the corner, hands in pockets. I would have walked around him, but a familiar glow caught my attention. This was no normal guy. This was a ghost.
The start to a complicated year.
