Rain POV:
It started out as a completely normal day. I woke up, painstakingly dragged myself out of bed, rimmed my eyes thickly with black eyeliner, threw on a T-shirt and a cardigan, jeans, and converse and then I was on my way to school.
I walked into school with my book bag on my shoulder and headed to my locker. I looked around. The halls were empty. If I quickly got my books out, I could get away to my first class without anyone-
“Hey, Rainie. Don’t you think you should go a bit easy on the eyeliner? I mean, you resemble a panda! If that’s your goal then you’re half way there. You’re fat enough.” I heard the high pitched nasal voice of one of the populars in my school. She was also my ex-best friend. I ignored her, though the insult about me being fat hurt me a bit. I was definitely not fat; I just wasn’t the anorexic thin girl she was.
“Back off, Callahan.” This time someone else spoke, a more welcoming voice. I looked up from staring at my locker to see Clover Jay, one of my best friends. Relief washed over me.
Clover Jay wasn’t looking at her though, he glared at Callahan. She fluttered her eyelashes at him. “Aw, a bit protective, are we? Down doggie, down!” She said mockingly then laughed, and her so called friends who stood behind her laughed as well. Clover Jay took a few steps so he was in the beach blonde girl’s face. “If you ever insult Rain again, I will make sure you’ll have to get plastic surgery again on the fake face of yours. We clear?” Clover Jay said calmly.
Callahan’s eyes widened; she was clearly intimidated by his threat. Clover Jay let me hurriedly shove my books into my shoulder bag and with a last pointed glare at Callahan; he slung his arm around my shoulder and led me off. “Thanks Clove, but you didn’t have to do that.” I said quietly, looking up his six foot form and into his attractive baby blue eyes. He ran his free hand through his short jet black hair and chuckled breathily. “Just be glad and be quiet.” He said with a wink, planting a swift kiss on my forehead. I smiled and leaned on to him as we walked to our first class. In case you’re wondering – no, we aren’t a couple, just really good friends.
The day went by quickly, nothing extra ordinary happened and I saw no new ghosts, apart from two ghosts my age that had refused to go into the light and had instead stayed to keep me company. After school was over, I started walking home because I hadn’t gotten my license yet.
Loud music crashed in my ears. I had my headphones in and was humming quietly. I turned around the corner of the pharmacy. My street was up next.
Suddenly I screamed, jumping back. A bored looking guy my age stood before me with his hands in his pockets. Only he wasn’t really standing before me. He was glowing. I yanked my earphones out of my ears with a wince and shoved them into my bag. My eyes were wide as saucers.
“Who the hell are you?” I exclaimed, still in shock. The ghost looked shocked too, the way he had frozen in place and was staring back at me. The ghost didn’t answer for a while, giving me the opportunity to look him and down.
He was gorgeous. I mean, really handsome. He had brown short hair and beautiful ice blue eyes that were twinkling in confusion. He was the lean muscular type and he had the sort of ‘cute’ vibe to him. All in all, he was attractive.
I was snapped out of my thoughts when the ghost spoke. “Uh, I’m Aiden. You can see me? Some guy walked past me and I tried to talk to him, but he ignored me.” He asked, his brow furrowing. Oh great, now I’d have to explain myself. Here goes.
“Well, I can see ghosts, like you. Er, I have a ‘gift’. My name’s Rain, by the way.” I watched his reaction. His eyes went wide. “What? I’m not a ghost!” Aiden protested. He lifted his hand in front of him. Sure enough, he could see through it. “Oh my God, I’m dead?” He panicked.
I looked past him to see a car that was crushed up against a pole, and Aiden’s bloody body was on the ground among the shattered glass. “You just died in a car accident.” I informed him. Aiden turned around to see the bent and broken car, and his own body. His hands flew up to his face. “I can’t be dead! I’m only sixteen!” He yelled, turning back to face me with huge eyes.
Looks like making him accept his death wasn’t going to be easy.
And I thought I would get some peace this year.
