Pine trees and open fields, a nice fire and a few laughs with friends. Just another summer day, at least that's what Jayk thought. The day started like any other summer day. A fresh breeze, taking away some of the blistering heat. The sounds of birds singing along to the sunrise. Just a peaceful morning out at the cabin.
Jayk could smell the bacon all the way from his bedroom. Without even opening his eyes to shake away the sleep spell he had just gotten out from, he threw on a shirt and practically bolted downstairs into the kitchen. He finally opened his eyes to see his mother standing in the kitchen with his aunt, both chattering away while making breakfast.
"Did you hear about the bear attacks
happening around here?" his aunt
asked while skillfully flipping a blueberry
pancake.
Completely oblivious to their conversation, Jayk sat his seven year old self in his seat at the table. He then decided that he wanted orange juice, so he got up abruptly, causing his chair to clatter noisily to the ground.
"Jaykob Milligan Hobbs!" screamed his
mother, "you pick up that chair this instant!"
Jayk wordlessly picked up his chair and set it back into place, looking apologetically at his mom.
"Sorry little Jayk, mommy is a little
tense this morning, what with all
the attacks going on around here,"
his mom said, realizing she had
overreacted to the chair, "why don't you
go outside and wait for your breakfast?"
He smiled at her and ran to the screen door.
"And take your cousin with you!"
called his aunt as Anna walked sleepily
down the steps.
"Come on Anna, let's go outside!"
They shared a secret smiled and ran outside. Instead of waiting by the picnic table like they normally did for breakfast, they ran around to the back of the cabin and into the woods. They ran deep into the woods, taking the hidden path that they had discovered the week before. The path took them to a small pond, surrounded by trees. In the center of the pond, emerging from the water, stood an old tree filled on every branch with bright pink flowers that smelled like honey. Along with the flowers hung small plump fruits in many different colors. Jayk and Anna sat on a fallen log at the edge of the pond and waited.
They didn't have to wait long for what they wanted. After a few minutes, a small little trail of mesmerizing sparkles led from the tree to the children. They clapped as the small figure called over more of their friends and started making flowers float in the air. They flew around and laughed along with Jayk and Anna. Finally, they sprinkled a bit of their magic dust around the children, and they began to fly.
"Woohoo!" cheered Jayk as he
soared over the pond, "I'm a lost boy!"
They spent a good half an hour with their fairy friends before they heard their names being called from the cabin. As they waved goodbye to their friends, they walked back along the path to the cabin. Just before reaching the edge of the woods Anna stopped.
"We should tell them about the Fairies."
she said, pleading.
Jayk shook his head in disagreement.
"If we told them, our friends might
get hurt," he looked off towards
his mother laughing with his aunt,
"plus, they'd never believe us."
Anna nodded sadly, knowing it to be truth. Then they raced over to the wooden table where their breakfast sat and ate while their parents snapped photos of a truly unforgettable summer.
