I hate Jake Hanson with a fiery passion, not only because he is what we call a "popular", but because we are sworn enemies. Now being a popular isn't a good thing, only to another popular. They are mean, cold hearted and just plain bad kids. Jake's no fashion deva either, but I never expected him to be the one to point out my uncoordinated outfit.

"Your shirt doesn't match with that color jeans, Jess," he said with a smirk like he had won another point. That's right, we're keeping track and right now I'm winning.

"Oh please. Since when have you become so smart with clothes? From my view, you know nothing about fashion." Burn. Another point for me.

"Oh! Dude she got you there," said one of his idiot minions.

"Shut up John," said Jake angrily.

With a hair flip, I was on my way out of the classroom, but not before pointing out my success, "Another point for me!"

So that's how most days go, he yells something at me and I make fun of him, or the other way around. It's kind of stupid now that I'm saying it in my head.

It's currently lunch time and I'm talking to my best friends, Imoya Sanders, or Imi, and Arabella Jackson, or Ara. They are there for me through thick and thin, and they come up with some pretty snarky remarks.

"Hey girly! What are you doing after school today?" asked Imi.

"Nothing much, homework. You?" I asked.

"You are such a nerd! Let's go shopping!" said Ara.

"No. I promised my mom that I would be a good student, unlike you two, ever since my dad died. I want to graduate and go to Harvard-" I was cut off by Imi.

"Woah there girl! Harvard is way in the future! And don't worry about graduating, we still have one more year in this stupid place. So, let's go shopping!"

My family and I, which consisted of my mom, brother, Ashur, and myself, moved from Oregon to Washington, which has been pretty great so far. My dad died in a car crash about a year ago, which is why we decided to move, get a fresh start. But when Dad died, Ashur had to drop out of college to get a full time job as a pharmacist to support the family. Our mom had a low paying job as a teacher for a local elementary school, but she loved it so Ashur took the authority of providing the family with money.

"I already gave you an answer, no."

"Fine, your loss, I guess." said Imi.

"I don't care Imi. All I care about is my promise to my mom, and I don't intend on breaking it anytime soon." I said. I was too busy arguing with them that I didn't notice the lunch bell ringing, indicating that lunch was over. "Great! I was too busy arguing with you guys that I forgot to eat my lunch!" I said angrily packing up my things. I got up and walked over to the trash can, throwing my food away. Ara came up behind me followed by Imi.

"We're sorry, Jess. We're just worried about your well being. With all this talk about Harvard and-and leaving us! It's too much. You are crazy if you think you're leaving us anytime soon! We just can't live without you," said Ara tearing up.

"Oh my gee, guys! I had no idea that that was what you were worried about, I thought you guys just wanted me to go shopping with you," I said walking over to hug them.

"Group hug!" screamed Imi.

"Wow you three are so childish. Hugging is for children. But I'm sure Jess could pass as a child since I'm sure she's just as smart as a 1st grader anyways," said Jake coming up behind me. I looked over to Imi and Ara who were glaring at Jake as if he had just kicked a puppy. I turned around and gave him my own icy glare.

"And where did you get this information?" asked Imi.

"I can just tell, she looks like one," Jake said staring right into my eyes.

"Are you sure you weren't just going through your own files in the principal's office again?" asked Ara raising her left eyebrow. We all snickered and walked away from the now dumbfounded Jake. That look really suits him.

"Another point for us," I whispered as we walked out of the quad where everyone hung out during lunch. It was our free period next.

"You bet girly. Where to now?" asked Imi. We all had our free period together, which was really convenient. All three of us usually spent it at Starbucks or sometimes Target where we rode around in carts screaming until we were kicked out.

"I would like to finish my lunch," I said.

"Alright, the park it is!" yelled Ara.

"Ugh. Why?!" I said as we all started walking there. I hate the park, it's so scary. I have some very bad memories, like falling off the play structure and breaking my arm, which was recent. I prefer not to come here any longer but apparently Ara had other ideas.
