The Feild

The mile run.  Boy do I hate that run.  We have to run around the school under 30 seconds. If you go over you have to do it again.  It's not that bad even though I'm pretty much wet at the end of it.  My coach never lets me change into something less sweaty after.

'You're an athlete, athletes run. If you don't want to sweat leave' he'll bark if I ask. All I ever ask is to change into a cleaner shirt.  One that doesn't smell like a dog peed on it.  On the bright side I'm always the first person to finish the run.

Right now I'm high jumping.  I'm currently the record holder for the highest jump in the school. Last season I cleared 11' 9'. I always train and work hard because each year I have to get higher numbers.

Your mind has to be in it.  The run is what starts it all. If the run isn't perfect you can't lift off the ground. Letting yourself get into it is important. I can't afford to show fear. Fear holds you back. Nothing should hold me back.

It's time to go. The bar is at my preset hight, 10' 9'. I make a hard sprint towards the bar and lift off with both feet. My landing is solid. The bar didn't move a bit. I cleared it.

"Yeah Evelyn!!" Hannah exclaimed. I shot a grin. She's another high jumper whose been doing it way longer than me. Her hair is pulled up in a tight bun and is wearing our old track uniform.

"Hey take your turn," I shouted. "Regionals are coming up!"

"Nah, coach wanted me to do another event so I'm practicing hurdles," Hannah said. "We'll talk later coach is going to be mad if we are talking more than practicing."

I let out a small chuckle, "True." She's my best friend. The one person that's been there for me. We're practically sisters.

I continued jumping up to 11' 9'. The bar is now at 12 feet. I've never jumped that high before. I'm not ready. I was about to start my run until I was interrupted.

"Practice is over! Pack your things and get here an hour early tomorrow," Coach called out.

Hannah walked up to me "Hey Ev."

"What's up?" I responded.

"Are you ok?" Hannah asked. "You look tense."

"Yeah I'm fine, I almost jumped 12 feet."

"Before Coach ended practice?" She asked.

"Yeah, I don't get why he ended practice early," I complained.

"It's because of the meet. He wants us to rest."

"That's great I need to rest." I was relieved. I've just been taking rep after rep. It'll be good to just curl up on the couch, and binge watch Switched at Birth.

Hannah and I headed over to Wendy's. The new look is very vintage. Black, white and red go really well together. I haven't gone to Wendy's in awhile so this was nice.

The line was really short. We were only behind two people. As we made it up to the line I saw a really attractive guy behind the counter. With that fawn hair and blue eyes he would be able to swoop anyone off their feet. We were caught in each other's gaze for a while. I didn't want it to stop.

Hannah elbowed my arm, "Ev!" I didn't answer because I couldn't focus. All sense of thought was gone. I think I forgot my name.

Hannah punched my arm, "EVELYN!!!"

I jumped, "What?!"

"Order your food," she retortes.

"O-oh I'll h-have a baconator with fries and a strawberry lemonade." I studdered for a little bit. Pretty sure there was a second I forgot how to speak. All I could focus on was him in that uniform. It gripped onto his body so firmly yet so loose. His muscular figure was shown. He made that uniform hot.

"I'll have the same," Hannah says.

We go over and sit at a table. Hannah's giving me that 'what the heck was that look'. If she saw someone like that she would of acted the same way. Actually she would been more dramatic than I was. It's a girl thing you can't help it.

"Girl what the heck was that?" She asked.

"He was cute," I nervously said.

"Aww you have a crush," she teased.

"Stop it, I'm probably never going to see him again," I said sadly.

"You never know." She was right. I hate when other people prove me wrong. It shows a sense of weakness. If I can't stand anything is the thought of someone being able to shoot me down. This is how other people take advantage of you. They find something that they can use against you and expose it. "I thought you told me that you wanted to be more confident this year," Hannah asks.

"I did," I said offensively.

"Then go talk to him."

"No way!" I said.

"It's like you said. You're probably never going to see him again. So if you make a fool of yourself who cares?" Hannah said.

"It's not that easy."

"Well, I bet you 20 bucks that you're going to see him again."

"No way! Even if I do when?"

"You are and you'll just see him at some point. When you see him I need to know the details and get the money."

"Yeah but what if you lose?"

"I'm not going to loose though." Her look is suspisous. How is she so sure? I feel she's plotting something.

I stood up. "You're on!!"
