it was the first day of the school year. she was new to the academy, having swapped schools due to her uncanny Ability going out of hand at her previous one. instead of being spritely and excited for the new experience, the girl seemed nervous and subdued. this is a new beginning.. I must try my best here. I don't want a repeat of what happened in my previous school.. but what if I can't control it? do you really think I can do it? she seemed to be muttering to herself, fixated on a certain point on the spotless, whitewashed wall. 'you're looking like you're in a trance again.." a gentle voice entered her thoughts. "o-oppa, what if I c-can't do it?" the girl was near tears as she turned away from her brother. "don't be like that, eunji, look at me now," eunkwang cupped her face in both his hands and tilted her face towards him. "it was not your fault at the old school.. that group of friends were particularly mean.. how could they tease anyone like that? it's not like there are spirits in this world in the first place!" eunji looked down at the ground. he still didn't know. "listen, eunji, this school has a superb reputation and also, I won't let anyone bully my younger sister again, you hear that? I'll protect you this time, trust me, eunji, believe me." determination rolled off him like a thick blanket. eunji could feel it. she wanted to believe him, really, she did, but he didn't know of her Ability and that loophole made her feel more vulnerable and helpless than ever.
as eunji walked alongside her brother on the way to her new academy, she sneaked worried glances towards her only friend - her ghost friend. younju nodded comfortingly at her and made a "hwaiting" gesture before pulling a face at her. eunji chuckled quietly at her friend's antics and focused on calming her palpitating heart. it had been so long since she last tried. how would she survive with another five girls in the same dorm now? it was hard enough hiding her Ability from her brother.. what would it be like having to hide it from five girls twenty-four hours a day? does that mean I cannot talk to younju anymore? her eyes darted around in anxiety, finally landing on her late friend with a desperate sigh. younju gave a slight frown as she pointed ahead of them. "focus!" she mouthed as the looming shadow of the school enveloped them. eunji faltered at the clunky stone steps leading to the gates, before taking a deep breath and heading in with her shoulders rigid. her brother led her to the receptionist desk, where she flashed her student identification card and confirmed her particulars. "you're in dorm 21, the third level, turn right at the elevator, last room from the left." eunji meekly retrieved her dorm pass from the receptionist. eunkwang flashed his own dorm pass before getting into the elevator with eunji.
travelling up in silence, eunji scanned her surroundings nervously. she hoped that this place wouldn't have too many spirits lingering around; it was already hard enough for her as it is. as the elevator slowed to a stop, she linked arms with younju, who gave her a comforting squeeze. she braced herself as the lift doors slid open.. revealing a girl in jeans and a simple t-shirt struggling with her lanyard which had gotten entangled in her trunk. eunji released the breath she had been holding unknowingly. "h-hello!" the girl waved cheerily as she batted at her trunk. "I'm new here!" as she fished out her lanyard, a spirit popped into view from behind her. eunji muffled a scream. the ghost looked surprised too. pretty.. and surprised. the new girl seemed to have noticed something out of the ordinary as well; she looked up in astonishment. "what..?" eunkwang broke the silence. "please don't tell me this is another one of your girl fights, it's too early for that sort of thing to be happening now. we just got here.." the stranger was the one who diverted her gaze away from the pair of siblings first. "sorry.. I didn't mean to stare.. I mean, you've got such.. pretty eyes!" she beamed at eunji and the latter could feel herself blushing. this girl is so friendly.. I hope we take the same classes.. and this place isn't bad. it's a good change.. and they have pretty ghosts too! eunkwang scratched his head and puzzled over the change in direction of the conversation.
"I'm in dorm 21, are you new here too?" the girl smiled as she skipped towards the room on the left. "I-I'm in t-there too!" eunji stuttered as she made a move to follow the other. "that's wonderful! we can look out for each other!" the mysterious girl was a natural at making friends and making others feel comfortable. "I'm ji-ae.. nice to meet you!" "eunji.." eunji awkwardly pointed at herself. "n-nice to m-meet you too.." eunkawng nodded in their direction. "I'll leave eunji here with you.. take care of each other okay? be strong, eunji!" the last line was directed at eunji. ji-ae seemed to understand that eunji was scared and had trouble fitting in. she could see that eunji was trying though. "here!" ji-ae held the door open for eunji as the latter hugged her brother goodbye and gave a little bow before disappearing into the apartment. younju followed her in, staring quizzically at ji-ae, who motioned for the other ghost to follow as well. as they all entered the cozy apartment, ji-ae proceeded to lock up and move her trunk to the unoccupied bunk beds. two of their dormates had already deposited their luggage but other than that, there was no sign of anybody else in the dorm.
they went about silently unpacking their trunks until ji-ae initiated banter. "heyy," ji-ae looked down kindly at the little girl arranging her clothes in the drawers. "I'm turning twenty this year.. how about you?" eunji was evidently shocked. "ahh u-unnie.. mianhae.. I d-didn't know you were o-older.." ji-ae gave a light chuckle and patted the younger on her head. "silly.. it's okay.. you can call me ji-ae if you like!" ji-ae offered but was aware that it might make eunji uncomfortable. "or you can call me unnie! it's okay both ways!" eunji nodded. "neh.. unnie.." ji-ae smiled and went back to packing. the dorm arrangements are special. we have me, a junior, bunking in with a freshman.. that's a whole four years apart! and the ghost.. it keeps following her about.. a guardian angel maybe? tiffany has been acting weird since that girl came too.. tiffany had followed her everywhere since she first met her and always being the bright and cheerful friend-ghost she was, had never been as brooding and quiet as she was now. tiffany was in fact, sitting on the end of the bed, staring at the other foreign ghost. after making sure that eunji was not within earshot, ji-ae whispered to tiffany. "tiff, are you okay? do you recognize that ghost?" tiffany shook her head with an unfathomable expression plastered on her face. "this is weird.." "what's weird?" ji-ae chirped, getting more inquisitive than ever. "ahh.. nothing. it's just.. I think the journey here tired me out.." tiffany replied, still looking troubled. ji-ae frowned slightly as she processed tiffany's reply. "I guess ghosts do get tired too.. rest well tiff! school doesn't start till tomorrow.. we're early!" ji-ae positioned her teddy bear squarely on her pillows and looked back to see eunji dusting the dust bunnies that had collected in the nooks and crannies of the bunks.
with an entirely new and foreign atmosphere, the two girls busied themselves with their own business, shaking off the weirdness as boarding school jitters.
