Eye lids closed and heavy, my vision was pitched black. Instead of feeling panicked, an overwhelming sense of peace washed over me. The sweet smell of flowers entered my nostrils and the prickly sensation of grass held me captive. Just as I was about to lose myself, a subtle voice called out to me.
"Yongguk."
My eyes fluttered open and I was finally able to observe my surroundings. Sitting in the midst of a field, I looked here and there but the source of the voice was no where to be found.
In that moment I could feel someone's palm pressed against the back of my head. Delicate fingers making their way through my tangled locks. When I turned around, I was greeted by my mother's warm smile.
Suddenly tears began to flow from my eyes and streamed down my cheeks. My mother was no longer hooked up to machinery. Her once pale complexion was replaced with color. Everything about her countenance reminded me of the time before she was sick; if such a time ever existed.
She took me in her embrace and comforted me, rubbing small circles into my back. I can't seem to remember the last time she hugged me like this. As I buried my face into the crook of her neck, I inhaled her scent.
"Why does she smell like burnt bacon?"
Just then my paradise was interrupted by the chiming of the fire alarm.
"Yongguk! Breakfast is ready!" My brother shouted from the bottom of the stairs.
I let out a deep groan, peering over to my clock.
6:00 AM
"Fucking great," I thought.
"I love him and all, but really?"
